I found another great use for the charcoal powder for a face mask (not the Elmer's glue kind). By adding a spoonful to clay powder, mixed with apple cider vinegar it doubles as an effective face mask.
It says there is organic cinnamon in this, but honestly, I have only tasted a slight hint a few times. It is not an overpowering cinnamon taste at all. It actually has very little taste, cinnamon or otherwise. That is so awesome because I can't stand the taste of toothpaste. I have always had to be careful with toothpaste because there is something about it that can affect my gag reflex. No such problems with this powder. I dislike so many things about toothepaste... The smell, the taste, the chemicals, the artificial sweeteners (?), flouride, the after taste and effects. This powder doesn't have any of the things that make toothpaste so unpleasant. There is very little flavor, It doesn't smell, there are no unpronouncable chemicals, nothing artificial, no flouride and there is absolutely no sickening aftertaste and I can eat and drink right after brushing without my sense of taste being altered for at least an hour afterwards.
It takes only a little of this for each use. I have been the only one using my jar, so I wet my brush slightly and dip the bristles into the powder. If you had other family members using it, you could spoon some powder into small storage bowls with lids so each would have their own to dip their brush into. It does require a little care not to get black sprinkles all over. You can definitely make a mess if you're not careful. But the same can be said about toothpaste. And just like with toothepaste there can be little spatters on the counter and mirror. Only they are black instead of white. They wipe right up with a wet washcloth or paper towel. I have not had any issues with the charcoal staining my counters, clothes or the washcloth. I do typically rinse the washcloth out under running water after wiping any powder or splatters.
So about the black teeth.... yes it is very shocking the first time, heck the first few times, you see it! It seems to run contrary to what we are taught is "normal" about brushing our teeth. After reading up on how the charcoal works to bind to the stuff causing stains, and that it required a few minutes for the process to work. I changed how I brush. I brush in small circles to get the surfaces of each tooth, front top and back, just like with toothpaste. Then I let it sit on my teeth for an extra moment or two while I rinse my brush. When I am ready to rinse, I spit out the charcoal and swish water over my teeth and spit it out. I then sip a little more water and brush my over my teeth again to get any charcoal out of the spaces. I also have a permanent retainer that has some the dental cement so I brush over that good to get it all off. So it does take me a little longer than brushing with toothpaste. Is it worth it? YES. I was so excited when the powder arrived that I totally forgot to get a 'before" shot of my teeth, but I can see a difference in them. And I love brushing with this before bedtime and not waking up with bad breath in the morning. It does take a smidgeon more time than toothpaste and a little care not to make a mess, but I love everything about using this powder to clean my teeth.
