It is loud, but on main floor, similar to when the main blower is running full for AC. I added an adjustable speed control (I chose https://amzn.com/B01C7PA5NM), in a switched power supply controlled by the HVAC unit. I have the speed control set fairly low. Easily enough power to make the single vent in the second floor bedroom pump out the cold air. Problem solved.
I have had big problems with my master being crazy hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. I use to close every vent in the main floor and basement and it was still bad. The HVAC guys never put a large enough run upstairs to balance the house.
Well let me tell you. I put this in my square duct and it moves soo much air I had to get the controller to turn it down.
In the summer my bedroom was colder then my basement. It does make noise so I put roxul insulation all around it and the duck work and I can almost can not even hear it even if its running without the furnace on.
I just ordered a relay outlet to wire it into the furnace so it only comes on when the furnace is running. Haven't installed yet.
If you have a cold or hot second floor this is what is needed.
I currently own 4 of the 6 inch and one of the 8 inch, and will be buying more. These fans move a lot of air and do so without much noise at all. I have a duct muffler on the 8 inch fan and it's nearly silent, just putting that out there.
I started using these fans about a year ago and have had no issues at all. I'll be buying more to ventilate my shop, and to ventilate a large attic area that I think could use some air flow. These things are so great, I'm coming up with all kinds of uses for them. I recently finished using one of these to make a cheap in-home air circulation and filtration system. It really helps with these long winters to have more air movement and filtration, especially with a lap cat and a 140lb dog in the house.
And now that I live in the PNW, mold is a concern. I already have one of these fans venting the attic of my small shop. This spring I'll be installing these in the attics of my large shop as well as my house. They work great on the Active Air speed controllers and make very little noise while still moving a good bit of air when run around 80% on the dial in my experience (when mounted properly, I recommend bungees if possible).

First off smells leak right through them so even with a carbon filter they still allow smells to escape.Read more
