I bought two thermometers - this one and also Taylor 1522 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer. I must say that this one is much much better in terms of the screen size, ease of use. Accuracy-wise both seem ok (i dont need a precise temperature, plus/minus a degree here or there is not a problem).
If you want to avoid wireless (small kids or just personal choice), this is not a bad thermometer.
I ended up purchasing mine through Acurite's website. It was more expensive but worth it, since we clearly have systems that work correctly.
I can't give it a full 5 stars, however, since it's not always accurate, and I do have problems with where it will read the best. I think it would work best in a terrarium where it isn't as humid or warm, such as a terrarium for a kingsnake, milk snake or corn snake. We have a ball python, and since the readings can be a bit off, I decided to just mist the enclosure twice daily to be safe. So far, my snake is healthy with this method.
There's nothing in the instructions that say this.
Acu-rite confirmed that the item was defective.
It's asking a lot to have to buy separate batteries to add to the cost of a low priced item.
My biggest complaint is the back-light, though you can hardly call the tiny LED located at the tip, top of the screen a light at all. It's incredibly dim even in complete darkness and does absolutely nothing to help you read the screen. I resort to using a cellphone camera light to read it at night.
Secondly, the Celsius/Fahrenheit switch started to malfunction within the first week of owning this. It wants to display at Celsius no matter which side the switch is set to, and often times getting it to show Fahrenheit is a matter of mashing the switch toward the F-side until the screen finally flips over to the right reading.
And lastly, I use this to monitor the temperatures inside my ball python enclosure. It worked well enough, but during a period of increased humidity I regularly found it completely dead and unresponsive. And now, after a final dunk into the water dish thanks to the pushy reptile, it has completely ceased to function (not it's fault!). The benefit to this product's price is that is isn't expensive to replace.
