Portable Lightning Detection Features
Stay Ahead of the Storm
Have peace of mind while enjoying your favorite outdoor activities. AcuRite's strike alert lightning detector technology continuously scans for oncoming lightning storms, freeing you and your family to focus on fun. If lightning is detected, an audible and visual alert provides early warning to take action and find shelter.
Estimates Distance from Lightning Strikes
Provides reliable lightning detection and estimates of your proximity to a storm within a range of 25 miles. If the distance increases or decreases over time, this can help you determine if the storm is headed in your direction, enhancing lightning safety.
Portable, Weather-Resistant Design
This portable lightning detector is compact, weather-resistant and lightweight to make it optimal for on-the-go use. A no-slip clip allows for easy attachment to a belt loop or backpack.
Not all storms occur in the daytime. The momentary backlight delivers easy operation in low-light conditions.

Top Customer Reviews
Likes: Very affordable, common batteries (AAA), long battery life. Mute feature when desired. Portable.
Dislikes: A little hard for my aging eyeballs to read, could have better bold contrast to make it a little easier to read. And better night time back light - hence my only minor reason for 4-stars, 4-1/2 actually.
No regrets and I would buy another
What this has done consistently well is alert me to surprise, "pop up" storms which form in the area. The red light flashes and a mild beep is emitted for each strike, and the counter registers up to 99 hits. I have compared this to known accuracy "Spark" software and it picks up strikes from about 20 miles away. Yes, it will occasionally give a warning of interference and tell you to relocate it. This is just buggy software. My unit is currently sitting within three feet of 12 electronic objects, TV, computer, cable boxes, weather stations, and it works just fine. Regardless of what it tells me about interference, I just leave it in one place. It always alerts when a storm approaches.
If you are engaged in outdoor activities, your eyes and ears should be your first alert to incoming storms. If you are outdoors and this is in your pocket or on your belt there's no way you will hear its little beep, but you will see the flashing red light if you're looking at it. So sit it on a shelf and you will be surprised at how well it will work. It has been in service continually since mid-April on the same set of two AAA batteries. And today it alerted me to the development of tornadic storms in the KC area before the weather service had even posted watches or warnings, the lightning strikes were about 10 miles away as the storms began to form suddenly and unexpectedly.
To summarize, this works as intended, just use your brain when outside during the thunderstorm season, don't count on a $30 piece of plastic to keep you from getting hit by a bolt from the blue.
or rather early this morning. This gave me the chance to try the detector out.
I t most definately works! Since I live in an apartment with metal siding and a metal roof,
I didn't expect from it, or for it to detect ant thing at all. To my pleasant surprise,
the thing worked quite well. detecting 42 strikes , from the first storm, we had two,
from INSIDE the house> it detected 3, from a much weaker storm , around 5 AM.
there were a few "cannot detect please relocate" issues, and a few missed strikes.
but since I was inside, and the thing was shielded from strikes that perhaps occured
behind the building, and where the most metal could block the EMP"S from them
this is not an issue the unit is designed to used outside where it is needed it would alarm, and light up , give strike count
and strike distance, thae latter seem fairly accurate, but I can't really say trying this in a metal structure.
to sum up, it works and if you enjoy outdoor activites, i fly rc models it is cheap insurance
it is worth the price. Consider the alternative, if you get struck your injuries can be catastrofic,
and life long. Please remember this is not a protection device. THERE IS NO SAFE PLACE OUTSIDE
IN A THUNDERSTORM . as lighting safety's leo the lion says: " WHEN THUNDER, ROARS GO INDOORS"
The only reason I took off one star is that the display contrast is poor in low light and the backlighting is not nearly as bright as it appears in the picture. In fact, the backlighting is so dim as to be almost worthless. I am also not a fan of blue backlighting in general. I would have preferred green (to which the human eye is more sensitive, particularly in low light) or maybe orange, since this is, after all, a warning device.
There are several units on the market with no display at several times the price of the AcuRite so I think it's safe to say this is worth the money. If you use it outdoors and particularly in direct sunlight the display problems I discovered will be a non-issue. Recommended purchase.
