Acu-rite 5in1 Temp Sensors are Notoriously "Acu-WRONG", this helps a little

I'm a Weather junky, and I've owned a dozen moderate to "Pro" level weather stations. Currently, I have 3 semi-Pro to Pro level weather stations running on my property - Acu-"Wrong" 01538 5 in 1 Pro which this upgrade is now installed, a semi-Pro LaCrosse 17-3271417BW and a Ambient Weather WS-5305 Pro which has 5 independent of each other sensors. Granted the Ambient Weather cost $100 more than the Acu-Rite, at $150. The Acu-"Wrong" 01538, as all the other Acu-Rite 5-1 models have a horrible reputation of huge Temperature Spikes when the sun shines on the ONE solar panel head models in the early mornings and afternoons. The reason is simple, the ONE solar panel ONLY runs the circulation motor when the Sun is due South, ALL Acu-Rite 5-1 models should have had the Dual Solar panels right from the beginning. I resent having to pay another $50 plus shipping and tax for something Acu-Rite should have seen as a problem from the beginning. Incidentally, my Ambient Weather station NEVER has these Temperature Spikes and it doesn't need to have solar panels to run a fan. I want to note that this dual-solar panel head has helped somewhat, 5 on a scale or 10, but it still has false temperature spike when the Sun is on the 5-1 head.

I bought this hoping to improve the inaccurate temperatures being reported. The heat of the day threw readings off by as much as 10 degrees. I even raised the instruments to 10’ above the rooftop (over white tiles) and still got exaggerated readings. I also felt like I would get better customer service from Accurite. They are an hour away from me. I had a difficult time getting them to even respond. I’ve since discovered the rain gauge is off as well.

An easy and economical upgrade.
My AcuRite Pro from several years ago was recently shredded in a severe hail storm.
This "upgrade" fixed the loss of the wind anemometer (speed) and a couple of other useful sensors.

Upgrade is easy, nice instructions.

Sure beats replacing the entire unit!

ps: this "upgrade" is intended to solve abnormal high temp sensing -- AcuRite installed a better cooling fan. So far I think they did a fine job, my new "temps" are more in line with my other thermometer sensors.

Update 9/2017: outdoor temps are now in line with my other sensors (various locations around the residence).
This upgrade continues to serve well, no issues.
Recommended.

The name Pro+ implies that this is a top-of-the-line product. However, out of the box, the outside and inside temperatures were off by as much as 4°. It is fairly easy to recalibrate for the faulty readings. But why should you have to do this? BTW, I measured the outside temperature each day just prior to sunrise to eliminate the sun as a variable.
Additionally, you will need to purchase the 06003 Pro+ upgrade for about $35 for the 5-in-1 sensor (06003M). The reason you need the upgrade is because meteorologilogical outdoor temperature refers to temperature in the shade that is well ventilated.
The ventilator that came with the 5-in-1 failed to keep the temperature sensor from providing false readings. So, I paid for the additional upgrade with more solar cells to run the ventilation fan more often, when needed.
Now, you can mount this unit in the shade by sacrificing a correct rain gauge reading. The only way that I could mount the sensor in the shade would be to place it under a tree, which would render the rain gauge useless. That is what the $35 upgrade is for.
Additionally, AcuRite (acuwrong) has no telephone support. Moreover, the email support was atrocious and rife with incorrect information.
As a general rule I am generous with my ratings and this is the lowest rating I have ever given a product, deservedly.

I will be honest, I didn't buy this as an upgrade all though it is. I hit the old weather station with my tractor (just barely). The anemometer cups broke off and the body was cracked. We were looking to replace it because it was mostly destroyed. Then we saw this! It is perfect. I smashed the top off our old one but the rest of the unit was fine so we spent $100 LESS and just replaced the top.
There are two solar panels and the old one had one, so it is better.
Both units only send a signal every 15 seconds so it didn't upgrade the one thing we don't like.

I bough this unit to replace the worn out one on my 5 in 1 station which I have had for over ten years. The temperature sensor was never reliable on that unit, but I have another indoor/outdoor thermometer which IS accurate and reliable, so I kept using this one for its wind speed and rain gauges. When the solar vent fan went out on my old one, I considered replacing it with the newer design, but put it off since I don't rely on the thermometer anyway. However, I accidentally broke the anemometer "whirlybird", so I decided to buy the whole assembly instead of just the part I broke. I tested the solar vent fan before installing this sensor assembly, and was HOPING it would be more accurate than the old one for temperature, but alas...no such luck. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this 5 in 1 weather station, but I don't know where else I would find the rain gauge and anemometer in one unit otherwise, so I'll keep it.

The AcuRite 5 in 1 weather stations have two power systems. The radio link to the display or internet link is powered by 4 AA batteries. I use lithium batteries for this as they last longer during cold weather. The solar panels provide power fro a small fan inside the housing that keeps air moving through. By design the weather station should be set out clear of structures and trees, in other words direct sunlight. Without constant air movement the temperature sensor would register the temperature of a closed space under sunlight. The fan makes it read the external temperature.

Simply put having two solar panels is better than one. More sunlight is gathered from different angles and it increases the time the fan can run. Obviously the fan is not needed at night.

The upgrade is simple to install and does improve temperature accuracy. Oh yeah, there are small screws involved. Don't loose them.

My AcuRite is really old, at least 8 years possibly older. Years of being in the elements (at first 25' up my antenna tower, now 22 stories up on my balcony railing) has worn down parts but I can always order a new piece instead of having to replace the whole unit.

The wind cups literally blew off one winter storm and were quickly replaced but the bushings were squeaking and I couldn't get them quiet. Since we're in an apartment now, I didn't want the noise to disturb neighbours so bought this replacement which includes the improved solar panel.

It was a quick swap out, works fine with our base station display. Recorded sustained 50 mph winds the other night. Living in an apartment it is great to have the weather at a glance because if we leave without the proper clothing, it is a long trip back up to change.

Acurite has kept improving their product while keeping the new parts backwards compatible with my station. That reduces landfill waste and makes the product better value since it can be repaired instead of replaced.

I found out due to squirrels chewing thru the wires for my AcuRite 06052M Remote Battery Pack this was the only thing powering my weather station!!! Now please realize that the station will not work during prolonged darkness ( although it will still work for a while when the sun disappears ) but it does work for over 60% of the day with no batteries used in the station! ( I don't want to get another remote battery pack as the squirrels will probably chew thru the wires on that one as well ).
Oh, by the way, it worked perfectly as advertised prior to my issue with the squirrels.

Makes a squealing noise with cold weather

Was easy to replace original sensor assembly and seemed to work very well......until cold winter weather arrived. Any temperatures below minus 20 deg C it made a shrieking noise no doubt from the bearings/bushings of the anemometer. I am guessing that the noise means excess friction with subsequent loss of accuracy.

There is a lube port on the shaft area but this problem seemed to occur too soon (first winter). Too cold to service on my roof now so have to wait until warmer and ironically, will not know if fixed until next winter. Also question what lubricant should be used once I am able to get up on my roof to service it?
