A young boy's relationship with his "temporary" mother and his first encounters with a mysterious teenage girl anchor this story of exploration and revelations. Jackie, an almost 11 year old, explores his hometown of Decatur, GA in the summer of 1947.

John R Turner paints a vivid picture of a past culture through youthful eyes. The reader comes to understand the geography, demographics, culture, religion and politics, as our hero experiences the complexities of growing up in this snapshot of a week in his life.

Jackie experiences the simple pleasures of home-made breakfasts and dinners; playing with friends; spending time in forbidden places like the local movie theater and the woods; and other mundane, yet exciting adventures. I found myself re-living many of my own youthful experiences and powerful relationships and am grateful to have these memories recalled.

Adair Street is a truly enjoyable eight days in the life of a good-natured 10-year-old boy growing up in Decatur, Georgia. Though I grew up in a different time and place, it stirred fond memories of my youth - exploring, discovering, being awed by some people and alarmed by others, questioning authority, and so on.

I can't do it justice in this review. Suffice to say that there are those books which are enjoyable, and then there are those I can't put down; ones where I find myself disappointed that they have to end... books like Adair Street.
