This rolling pin is just like the ones they use on the great tv cooking shows! It's made of quality material, has a very comfortable shape, and is easy to keep clean. There's a little bit of a storage problem in my smaller home, but it fits easily standing in the corner in the guest bedroom, and also stores easily in the under-bed storage container. Would buy again, but I doubt I will have to!

I fell in love with the French rolling pin at a friend's house in the early 80s, but only recently upgraded, even though I thought about it every time I used the big clunky rolling pin with the ball bearings and the central spindle. This rolling pin is great, and allows me better control over the thickness of the pie crust and tortillas and pizza crust, although there is a slight learning curve. It works differently than your mom's old rolling pin. The French rolling pin is also easier to keep clean. There is no place for crud to hide. I gave mine a light sanding with a Scotchbrite abrasive pad (as you'd use to scrub pots) and I rubbed mineral oil into it before the first use. It's fairly nonstick after that treatment. This French rolling pin is probably longer than your current rolling pin, and it needs more counter space when working, and that's a bit of a challenge in my cramped kitchen, but it's worth it for the other advantages. The only thing I really didn't like was the adhesive backed sticker that was permanently affixed to the rolling pin. The only way to remove it was to sand it off, and even then, some of the adhesive remained in the wood grain. What a ridiculous customer hostile mess! Why? So shoplifters can't swap barcodes with a cheaper item? Where's that Amazon hassle-free packaging when you need it? If some retail stores require a permanent sticker (shame on them), then seal the rolling pin in a plastic sleeve bag and put the sticker on the bag.

Bar code sticker came off cleanly!

After reading some of the reviews about the permanence of the bar code sticker on this rolling pin I was a little worried. However, given the price/value proposition I decided to take a chance on it and I am glad I did. The item arrived today in the mail. The first thing I did was wash my hands and then carefully remove the rolling pin from the plastic bag. Then with my clean fingers and finger nail I gently lifted up an edge of the bar code label away from the wood. It put up only slight resistance at first but eventually it came up. Then slowly I started to pull on the bar code and sliding my fingers flush up against the pin as the label peeled slowly away. Eventually it came off completely without tearing. It did leave a little glue residue behind but I simply rubbed my fingers over the area where the sticker was and all the glue came off. Maybe the manufacturer heard customer complaints and changed the formulation for their label glue. Either way it wasn't much of a problem for me to cleanly remove the bar code sticker.

I have been using the straight ones and the ones with handles for a while, but IMHO curvy (tapered) pins and this one in particular are a lot more convenient to use.

With the handles, the pin might not roll when you need it to, and more pressure might get your work-of-art slide here and there sometimes.
With the straight pin, everything's fine except that you still need to manually adjust the rough edges especially on shortcrust dough.
With tapered pin, and with the appropriate technique using the ends in an oblique and 1/4 of a circle motion, rounding standard 28 cm crusts is a breeze.

Measurement of center straight (not tapered) section: 20.5 - 2 x 5.5 = 9.5 inches. Seems short on paper, but no problem on the job, great for rounding edges in fact, with a smooth angle.

Order, delivery, finish (surface) were perfect. Using it mostly for shortcrust pastry, beating up the kids and the butter for puff pastry.
... just kidding, I'm using a pizza peel for the kids :-)

I was on the hunt for an identical but shorter length item. I found (and bought) an 11 inches bamboo one, not tapered, but does the trick for tartlets and Asian dough wrapped goodies.

So much for a piece of wood, you wouldn't believe.

P.S.: Looks like the kids joke tanked with some readers, LOL! Check the comments ...

Just wanted to say - it was really easy to peel off the label on mine - I didn't have to soak or anything, and no residue. They must have listened to complaints and changed the glue. Or maybe it only happens when the glue gets old and sticky... In any case, it was placed at the very end of the rolling pin.

The dimensions are as stated. It's a solid piece of wood, no laminates like for others I've read. My sister convinced me to get it over a standard one with the handles, and I am very happy she did! Haven't tried it yet in a recipe, but it feels perfectly fine to roll. And it's more compact to store.

And I love the fact that it's made right next door, in Vermont!!- not China, like a lot of them.

FYI, there is and FRP-2, which is little thinner - if you prefer that. I think it would have worked just as well. But this one happened to be lower priced at the time I bought it.

Beautiful quality. Super smooth, nice tapered ends. A dream to make piecrust with. And I love that it’s made in the USA. I am Cdn, but as long as it’s made in North America I am happy. Like the other reviewer said, I saw the famous Chef John using this end it looks so easy when he was making his pie crusts. I had never seen a ruler like this, I’ve always had this big fat one that the dough stuck to all the time. I thought it was just me and my recipe that was the problem, but it was actually my roller!! This roller is outstanding. No sticking. But remember everybody, you have to hand wash these things. Never put this in the dishwasher if you want it to perform well for you for years....

I had to finish the sanding job by hand. There were a lot of fibers sticking out, it was pretty bad honestly. And that's not a lot of work to do. Don't know if my granny would be happy about that if it was her's though. Maybe something to be aware if you buy as a gift and don't know how to do that. Maybe it was just mine too. I don't know if they're made by hand. If so, it could as well just be the one I got that didn't really make it to my expectations for quality control on that side. Not hard or long to do though, I really expected better than that. And it's like half of the job really. Probably should've done it myself from scratch really..

I’m 53 and have always had the old fashioned (I thought) rolling pin with the little handles at the end. I needed a new one, did some research, and found this to be very highly regarded as one of the “best”. Anyhow. I love it. The lack of little handles mean nothing. The tapered ends make this simple to use and much more effective. I can’t believe I didn’t discover this 30 years ago.
