Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Thanks for checking out ADAMSON'S ROCK AND OTHER STORIES, my collection of shorts featuring the award-winning ADAMSON'S ROCK. Here's what you'll find inside:

Ohrwurm: A detective investigates a suicide who looks strangely happy to have done it, and goes on a mission to find out why.

Rated "M": A divorced dad tries to bond with his son over video games. Bad idea.

The Collecter: A novice book collector stumbles upon an Edgar Allen Poe treasure, and will go to any length to keep it.

Phase Zero: A man agrees to participate in a three-day study for a new drug, only to find that the substance has some zombie-like side effects.

Absentee Ballots: An earnest public school teacher makes a Quixotic run for public office, and finds some supporters in the local graveyard.

The Monuments of Phy-lor: An insect-like species from a carbon planet crosses the galaxy in search of the fuel they rely upon, only to discover that this particular galaxy hides some haunting secrets.

On Kennebago Lake: A man weekending in a Maine cabin finds that the woods are filled with some exotic creatures.

Adamson's Rock: Where will you spend the end of the world? Paul Ellerbee went home. This award-winning novelette concerns a close-knit New England family coming to terms with an impending extinction level event, an asteroid that has Earth in its sights.

Plot/Storyline: 4 3/4 Stars

These stories were all good, with some being exceptional and the final one achieving excellence. The plots were pretty original for each work. With one exception, "Absentee Ballots", the storylines were well done.

The exception I mention above, "Absentee Ballots" is due to that story being so unrealistic as to be ridiculous; however, it was mercifully short.

"Ohrwurm" was very good; even though I could see where it was headed, it was an enjoyable trip.

"The Collector" had an interesting twist. I enjoyed the author's use of Mr. Poe's book in this one.

My second favorite was one involving a kid visiting his father, "Rated `M'". Even though I don't agree with the father's reasoning, it was a great read. This one was creepy!

My favorite was the final story for which the book was named. This one was by far the best in the collection.

Character Development: 4 1/2 Stars

The character development was fairly well done overall for the medium. Some stories were weaker on this than others.

Writing Style: 5 Stars

I have enjoyed this author's writing style in his previous work, and he does not disappoint with this newest publication. His sentences flow nicely; his descriptions are terse, yet adequate; his dialogue is realistic.

Editing/Formatting: 4 3/4 Stars

There were a few editing errors in the two zombie stories. I believe the others were fine, though.

Rating: R for Violence, a little blood and gore, a curse word or two, Adult Situations, and general creepiness.

This short story collection is four stars plus. I wasn't crazy about all of the stories, but some of them definitely hit a home run. I would call the stories horror, but not in a blood-and-guts kind of way. They remind me of some of Stephen King's short stories, telling about the horror of ordinary people put into horrifying, strange, or just plain comical situations.

My favorites were "The Collector," "The Monuments of Phy-lor," and "Adamson's Rock." In my opinion, "Adamson's Rock," the final story, was superb, a definite five-star read, and by itself would be worth the price of the book. I heartily recommend this book, and I'll be checking out this author's other Kindle books.

Short stories are a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it's hard to write a great short story - it's a small space in which to create both good characters and story. On the other hand, it's an easy way to get to know an unfamiliar author.

Adamson's Rock and other stories was a remarkable collection. All of the stories were very well written, very clever and very memorable. Many of the stories reminded me of Robert Bloch - a little disturbing and very powerful. There were two stories that didn't connect with me, even though I enjoyed them. I initially was going to rate the collection a '4'. Then I read Adamson's Rock. Adamson's Rock was an amazing story. It took a basic science fiction concept and turned the concept into an emotionally gripping story that showed the humanity in the concept. It's worth twice the price of the book just for that one story. I look forward to reading more of Mr. Myers' work.
