1st tip: logon to adaptec.com and get the latest drivers for this card. Chances are the ones included on the installation disk are not the latest. 2nd tip: Follow the directions provided on how to override XP from installing it's own drivers and install the adaptec drivers. Do these 2 tips and you will have a FAST!, trouble-free usb2 card on your notebook.

Quite Sufficient

I bought this adapter to improve the data transfer rate to an external USB2 hard drive and as such it works quite well. Data transfer rate is 6 MB/s, about 10 times as fast as with USB1. Your mileage may vary.
I use the card exclusively under Linux; a recent kernel (2.4.21 or 2.5.5*) is necessary to get it to work reliably using updated EHCI drivers.

Works well but get the latest drivers...

I bought this device after buying a Buslink USB2.0 40GB hard drive and experiencing problems when running it through my USB1.1 hub - it was time to either upgrade the hub or make the move to USB2.0. The coin came down on the Adaptec card, mainly because of the speed increase USB2.0 delivers and because it woud give me 2 USB host ports in addition to the single hosr port on my laptop.
The Adaptec card went in ok and installed easy enough - but immediately gave me the same problems I was having with the Buslink drive running through the USB1.1 hub. Not a good start, but it has a happy ending.
I checked the Adaptec web site and downloaded new drivers(V2.2 at the time of writing, V1.1 shipped with the unit). I followed the very clear and simple instructions and a reboot later all was working fine. I've not thrashed the Buslink drive/Adaptec PC Card combination too hard yet, and it's only been going for a day or two, but so far so good.
The Adaptec PC Card/Buslink drive works well and seems faster than the internal drive in my aging laptop (NEC Versa LX, 233MHz, 168 MB, Windows 2000 SP2)
4 stars because of the need to update the driver.

Works great with XP

I bought this card for a Toshiba 6100 Satellite Pro. I intended it to work with a Maxtor USB 2.0 portable external hard drive which it does very well.
One thing of interest - I found XP Pro with service pack 1 has a driver for it and there's no need to install Adaptec's. In fact, Adaptec's doesn't install successfully as per their instructions, I'm assuming because of XP service pack 1. No matter, Windows XP's driver works great and at USB 2 speed.

Doesn't work with flash drives. Avoid this one.

Because this card DOES NOT come with a power adapter (the Belkin Cardbus card does, and I'm ordering one after I send this one back) it would not work with my flash drives. One it would not see at all, and the other it would see but not access.

I assume it works O.K. with low or non power devices such as USB keyboards or Mice, or with devices that have their own power supply such as an External USB hard drive, but I've tested neither. I just know this one is 15 dollars more, then you need to turn around and buy the adapter, which is not even listed on Amazon?

Also, the driver installation was a pain because after Windows XP installs its drivers, you have to disable all the USB controllers on the card, download the Adaptec driver, then it will install the Adapted drivers. That took me about an hour to find on the Adaptec website. I'm a technician and I do this kind of thing all day; it should not be this hard.

Avoid this one.

Avoid this one unless you are running Linux.

I own a 48x24x48 ext usb 2.0 Iomega burner for my notebook and so thought I would get a usb 2.0 pcmcia card for it. Well, to make a long story short I simply couldn't get it to completely install. I downloaded the most recent drivers from Adaptec, followed all their instructions on the website, etc., etc. No go for burning. I was able to get it to read from the external drive, so it wasn't a total waste.
Upon looking at several other reviews I have discovered that many people have had similiar problems with this card, although I have seen one person mention that the Win XP SP1 contained drivers for the card itself I still was unable to get results from it. (I tried it on Win OS's 2000, XP Home and XP Pro with and without the most recent SP's from Microsoft and with older and newer drivers, btw.)
However, one interesting thing I have come across from a few reviewers is it's surprisingly efficient compatibility with Linux! One review that came to mind mentioned Red Hat 7.3 as the one he found it working with.
For those of us who are stuck supporting themselves by using Windows based programs though (mostly page layout) this may be interesting but not really helpful practically. :) I am going to keep the card in the hopes that Adaptec will release a driver that works in the future, though, as I know that this company usually makes excellent products. In the meantime, I bought another usb 2.0 pcmcia card from OrangeMicro.

Excellent product

I bought this item after a bad experience with an ADS Technologies card (see my review for that one) that did not work. At first I was hesitant to shell out the cash for the Adaptec, but I was so desperate to find a USB2.0 PCMCIA card that did NOT require an AC adapter.

I have an HP Pavilion ZT1180 notebook, running XP Home SP2. Older, but a great notebook. The biggest drawback of my notebook is the lack of USB 2.0 ports (they are all USB 1.1). I needed a card that I could use with my 802.11 SuperG usb dongle and did NOT require an AC adapter. What's the point of being wireless if you still have to plug in the card!

The card is basically Plug and Play. I popped it into my notebook and it was rarin' to go (after the usual XP prompts to detect drivers, etc). I did not need to run the included CD-ROM, nor did I need to go to the Adaptec website for updated drivers. XP Home SP2 had the drivers for it. The card was able to support and provide enough power for my wireless USB dongle like a pro and I was able to surf at 108 mbps! I am EXTREMELY pleased with this card. I have not pushed the card by trying to install another usb device that would require power. There is a jack for an AC adapter, but no adapter was included with the product. You could probably pick one up easily at a Target or Radio Shack if necessary.

I have to say that it is worth the price (hence 5 stars) because of the power issue. Similar cheaper no-name or generic brand cards aren't capable of providing enough juice to power a simple USB dongle.
