I used this for my Samsung Galaxy S3 recently on vacation to play a movie. I was in a hotel and all I needed was an HDMI cable (which I pack in my travel bag anyway) to watch a movie from my phone. I didn't have to worry about extra charges on my room bill, I could pause, rewind, fast forward, through my movie on my phone. My phone even had enough power to play the movie while it was still downloading. I had started to download a movie from the play store and it was about half way through. I decided to start it to see if it would be choppy on the TV. It was smooth and I had no issues with playback. Works great when you want to play a movie, view photos on a larger screen or otherwise. Plus a great way to watch movies in your hotel on the go. I even used it to watch videos at a friends house on YouTube on her TV. Great for anyone who likes to take their media on the go. However, I will say that if you are using this to only play YouTube and Google Play movies, you might want to consider a Google Chromecast. All that is needed is a wifi network that both the Chromecast and your device are both connected to. Once connected, you don't even need an adapter. You just cast the video to the TV. Haven't ever tried a Chromecast in a hotel situation yet, but I recently got one as a gift. It works great at home but something worth looking into traveling with as well. The only issue is that the Chromecast requires a power source. With the lack of plugs in a hotel, and not all TVs having an open USB port, this may not work as well as it sounds in theory. Which is why this product is great.

I initially ordered the adapter through Best Buy at $24.99, but I found out the hard way that Best Buy is selling the older model(Model: 39-0562-05)and had to return it. The older model isn't compatible with the S3.
I bit the bullet and paid the $33 on Amazon through "Accessory 4G". As far as I can tell, this is a genuine item. The model number on the box for this adapter was listed as "EPL-3FHUBEGSTD" but on Samsung's website, it's listed as "EPL-3FHUBEGSTA" so the difference of one letter at the end is enough that if you try to look up the model number listed on the box, Samsung will tell you there are no results. The manufacturer date on this adapter is 5/10/12.
I tested the adapter on a Samsung HDTV and it worked. It mirrored my phones screen. I tried Netflix and it played with good quality, no complaints except that your phone screen has to remain on while you use it which is a little annoying in a dark room. If you turn off your phones screen while it's playing Youtube or Netflix, it'll turn off your TV screen as well.
It's true that you need to plug the adapter into a power outlet, so that's a little annoying. You'll have to provide your own power cable (micro USB).
I also hooked this adapter up to my PC (Alienware m17x R3) to see if I could get it to work. Before you ask, YES, I have an HDMI-IN port. After hooking it up, the laptop detected a signal and switched to HDMI-IN, but all I saw was a black screen. I tried a few things but couldn't get it to show anything on the monitor. The manual tells you the adapter isn't compatible with all monitors so I'm not sure if it's that simple or if I'm missing something. PC compatibility is major for me because I was planning on using my phone to work and play on the go. I'll have to do more testing.
4 stars because it's not true plug and play.

The device initially functioned ok but was doomed to fail and it did so with 30 minutes.
1) The structure is internally weak. The body of the device needs to support a heavy HDMI cable, a USB power cable, and the Galaxy phone. Each of them, due to residual tension end up creating a network of forces on the adapter. You ab feel the small circuit board shifting around.
2) The phone interface is awful! Micro USB are tough to deal with, but the adapter to phone USB is extra long and poorly formed. It is ambiguously possible to insert the connector a small amount into the phone 180 degrees in the wrong alignment, thereby damaging the phone. The extra length, leaves an observer to think that the plug isn't in all the way.
3) the image on my monitor was of low quality. It was bigger than on the phone, but poor resolution.
4) the instructions, are written on microfilm in 20 languages. Good luck finding yours. English is at the top of the second column if your unfortunate enough to have been fooled into buying it. By the way, the instructions are written in micro-text and aren't really helpful.
5) I immediately returned the adapter after it quit working after 30 minutes due to intermittent signal.
6) the color black was ok.
7) The seller is reasonable, but the adapter is horrible.
8) Instead of the adapter I recommend a Fresnel Lens to magnify your screen.

I bought this for my Samsung Galaxy s4, and it works great! Firstly--it must be powered! Many comments of failure to perform have been related to lack of power. I connected a 6 foot USB-micro USB cable to this, and to a 2.1 Amp charger. Also, I connected a 7 foot HDMI cable to it and a TV, and plugged this into my S4. Like a charm, there's my phone's screen on the TV. Showed everything very clearly, and without lag. I then turned on my 16 GB Sansa Wireless Flash Drive whose 32GB micro SD card had some movies, opened the Sansa Wireless app in the phone, connected, and proceeded to watch a couple of films on the TV, pretty much in amazement. The quality was excellent, with no A-V sync problems at all, (probably due to the adapter being hard wired to the TV). I've not yet viewed internet video, but have no doubt that it should be fine, also, since whatever's on your phone, is on your TV.
All in all, a highly recommended, excellent product! Just remember to power it.

This produced a crisp clear picture on my TV . Initially there was no sound but I think this was an issue with my HDMI cable. The supplier offered to change it but it seems to be working fine now
My only critisim is that it need to be plugged in to the USB charger to work
While this means the phone won't run out of juice it does mean a lot of cables trailing everywhere!!
5 Stars for the supplier

It did take a good few weeks to come and TBH I had given up on it until one day it came.
Packaged well and looks legit.
The adaptor is solid and well made.
Set up is easy as - plug HDMI into adaptor, then plug phone charger into adaptor and then into the phone.
You will hear the charging sound and the phone will show on your TV.
Its a mirror image, ideal for viewing photos or, in my case, catching up on Breaking Bad through streaming sites!
With the better quality video the TV picture was perfect.
Only quibble is the phone tends to discharge even though it has a charger plugged into it.
If it helps - I managed to put the adaptor into the washing machine. All dried out and its still going strong.

Good product although concerned if genuine

This is a fantastic little product for the price however I am a little concerned if it is a genuine Samsung product as there was sticky label on the box stating Galaxy S3 and I'm sure if it were genuine it would have been printed on the box.
Does exactly what it is supposed to do though and the picture quality is vey good. Also because it is very small will be ideal to just carry around with you if travelling.

Video can be slightly jittery...

Playback is pretty good though and scales up well. Pleased with my purchase nonetheless. Enabled me to watch the first and second series of Breaking Bad whilst on holiday, which was a great time filler in the evening when my wife had retired to bed. Worth getting for sure, would've been 5 stars had it not been for the slightly jittery video. Not bad enough to put me off though.

Samsung HDTV Adaptor.

Very pleased with this product. Worked straight out of the box. But one word of warning though. If like me you thought you could use this to output Sky Go from your mobile to an HD television, think again. You will get the same message I did "Sorry Sky Go does support HDMI" This is not down to the adaptor though, and its a great piece of kit.
