First thing, the cable I received had the power and ground wires backward. So the +5v red wire was next to the green wire, and the black ground wires were next to the white wire. The device I was plugging into had the key blocked as well, so the shield ground pin had to be removed. After rewiring the connector it works perfectly.

Considering all the good reviews I suspect mine was assembled by the "new guy".

This works well enough to connect a device that expects to plug into a motherboard 'internal' USB pin header to a standard USB-A socket.

I think it would be better if the male 'internal' USB pin header were shrouded, to prevent accidental shorting in case the connection worked loose. Granted, for full compatibility the header would need to cover both rows, and this might be excessive in some cases.

What you see is what you get. Solid connection, no problems, and the 5th pin (2nd ground pin) is easy to remove for use with 4-pin connectors -- just use a toothpick or paper clip to pry up the bit of plastic that keeps it locked in place.
I'm using these cables to convert the two "type A" connectors on a NZXT IU01 Internal USB Expansion hub into a normal 9-pin USB header.

The problem: I have a Kraken X61 Liquid CPU Cooler that connects to a USB2 header on the motherboard to monitor and control the pump. My case has 4 USB2 ports on the front, which need to connect to two motherboard headers. My motherboard has two headers, but since the Kraken needs one header, I was unable to connect all the case's USB2 ports to the motherboard. I bought this motherboard and case so that I would be able to use all the available USB ports, but I failed to realize the Kraken would spoil my plans.

Looking at the wiring, the Kraken only uses one of the two USB ports on the header, so it was using up 2 ports worth of USB header when it really only needs one.

The solution: This cable solved my problem. I connected the Kraken to one end of this cable, and connected the other end to a standard USB type A female port. I was careful to make sure the red +5V wire on the Kraken cable connected to the red wire on the adapter cable. The colors of all the other wires matched up, so I felt confident this would work. My motherboard happened to have a USB3 type A female port available, so I was able to keep the cable completely inside my case. The cable is long enough to run it behind my motherboard tray so there is no additional cable clutter. It would also work to run the cable outside the case and connect to any available standard USB2 or USB3 female port.

Once this cable was connected, I was able to connect the remaining two USB2 ports on my case to the USB2 header that was previously used by the Kraken. Now all my external USB ports are usable and I am still able to monitor and control the Kraken.

I bought two of these because I have a Corsair AXi Series, AX860i, 860 Watt (860W), Fully Modular Digital Power Supply, 80+ Platinum Certified and a Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler CW-9060025-WW in my system. Corsair seems to think we all have unlimited USB headers on our motherboards, which isn't true, but I wanted to be able to monitor my systems with their Corsair Link software. I have a Inateck Superspeed 7 Ports PCI-E to USB 3.0 Expansion Card - Interface USB 3.0 5-Port & 2 Rear USB3.0 Port Express Card Desktop with 15 pin SATA Power Connector [ Include with A 4pin to 2x15pin Cable + A 15pin to 2x 15pin SATA Y-Cable ] which has two internal USB 3.0 ports and I wanted to be able to use them.

Not only do these cables fit the bill and work great, but they arrived way faster than Amazon predicted. As I write this, Amazon says they'll be delivered sometime in the next three days, but they're already in my computer! Sewell/Cables Unlimited even put them in an easy-to-open padded envelope: it's not frustration free, but it's as close as you can get without being Amazon.

I matched the wire colors on the cables to the wires coming off the Corsair devices, and now I can see everything in Corsair Link just like I wanted!

Prompt delivery, good packaging, the product works like it's supposed to. Great!

I custom build computers as my second job to bring in some extra doh. Many add-on USB cards have these internal USB "A" female connectors on them that without this cable are almost totally useless. Why the manufacturers just don't include a header pin connector like you see on a motherboard is beyond me. This cable fixes that design problem.

I would be sure to use either electrical tape, or shrink wrap to hold the two pin plugs together and to help insulate them. One of the pins carries +5 VDC at a fairly high current level, so you don't want that to come loose and go bouncing around inside the customer's PC. I use these when I run out of motherboard headers and need an extra internal USB header to power a card reader or similar internal USB device.

Tip: The red wire pin connects to the +5VDC pin on the device you wish to power.

Expensive, but worth it, if you need another internal USB port.
