Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
When a wizard's sword is stolen from a museum in present-day Scotland, FBI psychiatrist Sir Adam Sinclair is sure that the crime represents something serious. Through a mutual acquaintance, he meets and befriends Peregrine Lovat, a troubled painter who is able to "see" the past and future lives of his subjects. Sir Adam himself is the latest incarnation of the Adept, a spiritual force that battles evil, and he and Peregrine make a perfect team as they set out to discover who stole the sword --and why a 12th-century grave has been unearthed, freeing the revived corpse of Scotland's most noted magician, who then pk wanders into a barpage 127 in the dead of night. The sleuths determine that an evil cult seeks the magician's spell-book and hidden gold. Peregrine draws what he "sees," whether it's the location of the sword or the cult gathered at the graveside. Sir Adam's own mystical powers bring him close to the cult, but closer to mortal and spiritual danger. This is a fast-moving and suspenseful tale by an unusually adroit duo, and the open ending promises more in the future. Kurtz is the author of the Deryni series, and Harris's work includes Spiral of Fire.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Devoted Anglophiles will delight in the details of the life and times of Sir Adam Sinclair, physician, unadvertised assistant to the police in cases involving the occult, and the Adept. Along with Peregrine Lovat, an anguished patient and student of Sir Adam, readers follow the twisted path to a battle royal between forces of good and evil, between fairies and men of both stripes. This fast-paced story is slightly marred by an ending that seems devoted to capturing readers for the next title in the series, but it's fun, nonetheless.

From Library Journal
Sir Adam Sinclair's career as a physician masks his true profession as a magician charged with guarding the Light from those who would lead the world down the Dark Roads. Set in present-day Scotland, this collaboration between Kurtz (the Deryni series) and Harris ( Spiral of Fire , Tor, 1989) introduces a competent and likable hero. Good storytelling overcomes minor stylistic flaws in this first in a new modern fantasy series. For large libraries.

After reading The Deryni books; I decided try the first book in The Adept series. Katherine is a great author, wonderful storyteller - as is Deborah. I was immersed into this brilliant work of art from page one! Sir Adam Sinclair and Peregrine Lovat make a great duo!

The publisher contacted me through my review on another site and made available a clean Kindle version of both this e-book and the sequel. My complaint has been resolved, and I am very satisfied with how this was handled. I've given the book the five star rating I think the narrative deserves. I appreciate it when responsiblity is taken and reasonable recompense made.

I read this book in paperback more than once. When I wanted to read it again I discovered that my copy was gone. Well, let's see if it's available for Kindle. I was so surprised and delighted to find that it was; I could get it and start reading it right away!
I'm rather wishing I hadn't, now. Random punctuation marks. Frequent typos. Text that skips half a line, then drops down. NONE of these things were in the paperback edition. I'm so disgusted at how one of my favorite novels has been mangled. The authors should be outraged. The publisher should be outraged and demand a cleaned up, updated copy be made available. Unless the publisher is responsible for this edition being so bad, in which case they should be ashamed, and should make available a cleaned up copy.

I bought the Kindle edition and read it using the Kindle app on my Android phone, FWIW. There are numerous misplaced punctuation marks throughout the text, possibly incorrectly displayed formatting, possibly just errors, but they can be distracting. The story is interesting but neither brilliant nor ground breaking. Think of Dr. Strange blended with a Doc Savage adventure. Some of the action did not feel realistic and some of the situations were predictable after a while, a few too many "These are not the droids you are looking for" moments where the plot got moved on through the persuasive power of the main character for no real reason. Perhaps in Britian people are less contrary and more agreeable that I am accustomed to.
I do not expect to read any of the sequels but I don't consider the first book a waste of time either.

The story was ok, but the editing was horrible. There were so many typographical and punctuation errors that it was distracting from the story. Some of them were almost funny, like referring to the Frasers as the Erasers, but mostly they were just annoying. I wonder if this was self-published. I can't imagine a "real" publisher letting something like this go to press.

The kindle version of this wonderful book is FILLED with typos. If they fixed them like they said then they have done a very poor job for a second time.
The only reason I bought it was so I could start the series as I already have the other books.
I gave it 4 stars when this kindle version deserves 2 max because this story and author deserve the rating.

Love this series and couldn't resist supplementing my print versions with ebook versions easier to take on trips.
Great start to a great series.
Adam Sinclair is a Scottish Baronet, a renowned psychiatrist, sincere patron of the arts...and secret magical defender of the Light. Several of the aspects are called into service when he meets celebrated portrait artist Peregrine Lovat, who finds himself in a mental and metaphysical crisis where Adam's services are required. Peregrine, in turn, is called to assist Adam and discovers that there is much about the world and himself that he was unaware of.

This is the first book in a fascinating series. I read these many years ago and was glad to find them again on Kindle. If you like magic, mystery and stories about the Knights Templar and Scotland this is for you. The characters each have their own unique part in the story and are all very likable and you find yourself rooting for them. Not your "average" mystery and the ending is surprising and satisfying.

Love the tale - shame about the editing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 10, 2012Verified Purchase
I have owned this book in paperback and decided to put a copy on my kindle as it is a favourite tale that I enjoy re-reading. As always the tale is enthralling.
But it's a real shame that the editor of the kindle version has not caught the spelling mistakes, or (and this is even more annoying) the erroneous commas and single quote marks that turn up in the oddest of places in this version - none of these problems are present in the paperback copy I own.
I would give the story 5 stars, but the editing is so bad it's pulled the score down.

I am so pleased that Katherine Kurtz's Adept Series is out on Kindle at last. My paper copy has been read so often that it's in a mass of separate component parts. All her books are good, but the Adept series is KK at her best.

This book confirmed my view that a collaboration is not the same as a book by an author you like. I wont buy another and am surprised that K Kurtz put her name to this
