Adesso PS/2 to USB Adapter

I'm one of those IBM Model-M "clicky keyboard" people. I won't use any keyboard but an IBM Model-M.

Unfortunately, the Model-M keyboard uses a PS/2 connection and does not interface to newer USB only computers.

So, an IBM keyboard user needs a PS/2 to USB adapter.

There are adapters out there which simply cross the wires. These DO NOT work with the Model M.

There are adapters out there with an active controller chip in them which (supposedly) properly converts the PS/2 signal format into USB.

Now, here's the big point... the PS/2 protocol is bi-directional. That is, the keyboard sends signals to the computer, BUT the computer can also send signals to the keyboard (such as "turn on the num lock lamp" or "do a reset").

I've tried every active controller that I could find with my Model M keyboard.

NONE of them sent communications back TO the printer... except the Adesso adapter.

The Adesso adapter sends all data transactions between the keyboard and computer... in both directions.

I was using a different adapter before and had random problems such as no reset (I had to momentarily unplug the keyboard) and the worst problem was multiple keystrokes.

Sometimes it would do thissssssssssssss <- add a bunch of characters that I never typed.

The Adesso adapter doesn't do this. It sends data to the keyboard so that the motherboard can send reset commands to it and prevent lockups.

Bottom line: I've tried ALL of the active adapters with my IBM Model M keyboard and the Adesso adapter is the ONLY ONE that works flawlessly.

If you have a Model M, this is the ONLY adapter you should consider buying.

The one that actually works

For testing purposes I have an Ortek MCK-142 Pro mechanical keyboard that is a favorite throughout my office. It is an AT model with a PS-2 output. In addition, I added an IBM KB-8923 and a Dell SK-8100, both ‘pure’ PS-2 keyboards. I want to use these on a modern desktop computer with 2.0 and 3.0 USB ports. In researching for a way to do it, I realized that there is a difference between an ‘adapter’, which is only a wiring solution and a ‘converter’ that has electronics to assist in making it work. The problem is that there are many brands and items available and no real way of knowing whether any or all of them will work. So I took the proverbial bull by the horns and bought one of each to try out. This resulted in ordering 9 items for a cost of about $77, not too bad for my purposes.
I purchased: USB TO DUAL PS2 Adapter Convertor – White by SaiTech IT; Monoprice PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse to USB Converter Adapter, Black (110934); Tripp Lite USB to PS/2 Adapter - Keyboard and Mouse (B015-000); TRENDnet USB 1.1 to PS/2 Converter, TU-PS2; Adesso PS/2 to USB Adapter, connects 2 PS/2 connectors to 1 USB port/hub (ADP-PU21 ); SANOXY USB to PS/2 Adapter (this one has wires); StarTech USB to PS/2 Adapter - Keyboard and Mouse; Radio Shack PS-2 Female to USB-A Port Adapter 26-723; and SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter (this one is a little block).
I tried them one by one. All were recognized on the USB Device Manager as a keyboard, yet all, but one, failed to allow the keyboards to be recognized and function.
The only one that worked perfectly for all 3 keyboards was the “SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter” – the one that is a little block. This being Amazon, I immediately returned the other 8 and ordered a bunch of the Sanoxy's. Thought you might find my experiment helpful.SANOXY PS2 Keyboard To USB Adapter

Good PS/2 USB Adapter

Works with games (for instance space to jump in Minecraft does not stop forward motion)

After more testing, this adapter does not allow SHIFT-CTRL-A keyboard combinations, it either gets the CTRL-A or the SHIFT-A, but not both.

Works (inc. the bidirectional lines expected in PS/2)

I bought this for an old IBM Model M mechanical keyboard that I lucked out with at an estate sale. I didn't remember until I got home that my tower does not have PS/2 inputs. Oops.
This adapter connects two PS/2 devices to one single USB port; great because I'm constantly running out of USB ports as it is, so if (when) I get some other poor old PS/2 device, I'll be ready.
It worked flawlessly and has the bi-directional lines that I expect in any PS/2 cable - meaning that obviously the keyboard can send signals to the PC, as expected... but ALSO the PC can also send signals to the keyboard (for resetting and custom settings). That second line is something that some of the modern cheapo cables don't have, but is essentially one of the main purposes of a PS/2 cable. So, this one's got both lines - which is great.

Good Quality PS/2 - USB Adapter

Went through several cheap versions of this type of adapter costing a few dollars, purchased off eBay and shipped from Asia, all of they died within some months. Finally got this Adesso PS/2 - USB Adapter (ADP-PU21) from Amazon Jan 2008, and it worked without any major problems in connecting my PS/2 mouse and my old but great IBM PS/2 keyboard to one of my laptop's few USB ports.

The only minor issue that may or may not be associated with this adapter and my Dell Vostro 1500 WinXP/SP3 Home Edition laptop is that ocassionally after a Windows update or use of another OS boot (e.g. UBCD4Win) from a flash drive, the next Windows boot to the logon screen had a problem if one does not enter a password to logon within ca. 15 min. Although the mouse works, clicking on the account icon does not open the password enter box. Have not been able to determine why this happens, but what seem to solve the problem is to power-off, reboot to the logon screen and logon immediately, then use Nirsoft's USBDeview free utility to delete (uninstall) all instances of the adapter/ keyboard,/mouse, use the laptop touch pad to reboot Windows again. Upon reboot, the adapter is functional again along with the keyboard and mouse, and the Windows limited logon time window is gone (at least until next time...)
