RECORDCENT Grow Lights was formed and founded by age old growers who have utilized traditional High Intensity Discharge lighting to attain amazing yields and top quality results harvest after harvest, for decades on end. When LEDs first entered the scene many years ago, the folks at RECORDCENT were skeptical to say the least. The promise of cutting the electrical consumption in half, producing next to no heat, AND maintaining the same amazing quality cultivated from HIDs sounded too good to be true…..and unfortunately it was….at least in the beginning.
While resistant to buying into the new Light Emitting Diode revolution, and hesitant to disrupt their already successful setups, RECORDCENT still had its curiosity piqued. The potential for a light that could deliver all that was being promised would change the face of indoor gardening forever. The upside of this possibility was so great, the implications so huge, that RECORDCENT could not just look the other way.

Perfect Germinating Seeds (1-2 weeks)-NO Light Cycle
The first stage of life for a plant begins with the seed. At this point, your plant is dormant, patiently waiting for water to bring it to life. You can observe the quality of the seed by its color and texture. The seed should feel hard and completely dry, and be light to dark brown in color. An undeveloped seed is generally squishy and green or white in color and will likely not germinate.
Seedling&Clone Stage (2-3 weeks)--Light Cycle: 18 Hours--Hanging height:16-18"
Plants are considered seedlings until they begin to develop leaves with the full number of fingers on new fan leaves. A healthy seedling should be short with dense vegetation. The plant should not appear to be reaching for the light and the leaves should be a healthy vibrant green color. Be very careful to not overwater the plant in its seedling stage; its roots are so small, it doesn’t need much water to thrive.
Vegetative Stage (2 to 8 weeks)--Light Cycle: 13-24 hours--Hanging height:14-16"
The vegetative stage of Plant is where the plant’s growth truly takes off. At this point, you’ve transplanted your plant into a larger pot, and the roots and foliage are developing rapidly. This is also the time to begin topping or training your plants.
Flowering Stage (6-8 weeks) Light Cycle: 12 hours of lighting
The flowering stage is the final stage of growth for the plant. Flowering occurs naturally when the plant receives less than 12 hours of light a day as the summer days shorten (or as the light cycle indoors is reduced). It is in this stage that resinous buds develop and your hard work will be realized.

Mine is the 24" and came well packed . It had decent instructions for the operation of the unit , and came with the hanging kit and a remote control for the light. The remote and the front touch panel can select all modes for the light. There are presets ( MOONLIGHT, CUSTOM, SUNNY, CLOUDY, and one other I can't remember ) for light intensity if you want to use a setting used on-the-fly or are too lazy to program the unit . : > ) Smile!
First thing to do ( as I do with anything metallic that will be hung over salt water) is to wipe all metal parts\surfaces with a rag that is thoroughly impregnated with non-toxic mineral oil ( aka baby oil but without the scent ) to prevent rust. Next thing was to understand the the height adjustment fittings can be adjusted to both extend and retract the steel wire used. Initially I let out ( extended ) the steel wire and then when trying to retract ( shorten the wire ) I could not figure it out. I finally realized that ( DUHHHH! ) you must press IN the nipple end of the fitting as the other end that extends or lets out the wire only works one way ( extending it )
Sounds simple, but confused the hell out of me at first.
The fit and finish of the light is great , and makes one wonder why anyone would pay hundreds more for an "american made" one that are commonly touted as being superior and use the SAME CHINESE MADE COMPONENTS. This light seems to be made at one factory in China and simply distributed by many companies under different names. It's the same light.
Programming could not be easier , and you can do the light intensity in 1/2 and 1 hour blocks of time for a 24 hour cycle. I start mine at 6AM with just the blue lights at 3% then at 7AM 8% with 2% full spectrum kicking in. I then increase intensity accordingly until at 12 noon the both the Blues and Full spectrum are at 100%. At 400PM I progressivily lower the intensity with the Full spectrums being the first lowered and then the blues. I do this until at 10PM the ratio is 25% Blue to 15% full spectrum and keep lowering intensity until at midnight only the blues are on at 3%. giving a moonlight effect.
This moonlight effect is fascinating, and beautiful to see, as there is a distinct shimmering of the light on the sand and corals and yet the light is tremendously subdued. Certain corals start to polyp out after about 20 minutes under this light and this is amazing to see and show guests. Invertebrates that were hiding in the brighter light now start to come out into the open. Just really cool to view the tank's corals in this subdued "moonlight ".
My lights are programmed to go out completely at about 1AM.
The fixture is about 23 iches wide and about 2.5 inches high with a front to back length of about 8 inches ( don't hold me to be 100% on all of these measurements except the width ) . The fixture does have a female plug for 220 volts but only a 110 volt power cord is provided. The light can be hung and it's position adjusted easily with the supplied hanging kit.
NOTE: Always make sure BEFORE making height or angle adjustments the the lamp has a "failsafe" attachment that will prevent the lamp from falling into the tank should you slip up while adjusting things. This can be as simple as a piece of rope attached to the light that will act a a temp support and whose length prevents the light from falling into the tank. After your light is adjusted and secure, you can take off this failsafe rope. I have mine secured with both a chain and a rope/pulley system ( to adjust height ) with the secondary chain being the failsafe and it's length will prevent the light falling into the water if the rope/pulley system fails.
YOU MAY THINK THAT THE LIGHT CANNOT FALL INTO THE WATER BUT IT CAN!!
Now with that warning out of the way.......,more details...., my light is 2.5 inches above my 90 gallon tank which is 24 inches deep, 48 inches wide and 18 inches front to back.
The light penetrates well to the bottom of my tank, however the effective lighting width of this 24" light is about 33 inches so although you CAN use this lamp on a 48 wide smaller tank there will be two "dead" areas on each side of the last 5 or so inches of the tank. So two of these 24 " or two 16" may work better. My solution ( Until I get with another 24" or a 16" is to move my corals within the 33" light spread of this light. The intensity of the light has no problem providing light for the inhabitants on the tank floor as mentioned before.
I mention this , in case anyone is considering just buying one light or two 16's.... the one 24" CAN work but you'll need to move any light needing corals within the 33" light spread of the 24" ..., so there is some compromise to be made if you go that route on a wider tank. For tanks like a 40" breeder ( popular size ) or a 36 " tank a single 24" light will work just fine.
How is the color rendition?
Very natural , without the harshness ( when the light is at 100 % ) that some other Blue\Full spectrum combo lights have. With the full specturms at 100 % there is no overly bright white\yellow peakiness. Of course , this is just my observation with my eyes and without the use of a spectrometer, but I mention it anyway.
Fan noise is almost silent.., very quiet.
Light duffusion seems to be focussed towards the tank's width (a 90 degree spread? ) and unlike older lights , the lamp does not spread the light all over the place, just where it is needed ( in the tank ).
All in all, I would recommend this light and would highly recommend this light over the tremendously overpriced programmable lights offered by other manufacturers. If you feel that spending lots of money makes a product better , well that's up to you
For me however, it was a no-brainer.
It's now April 2016 and I want to recommend Hoobie Bug once again for this time Excellent Customer Service way after the sale. Through my own fault I brole the display in the 24 inch lamp by a slight accidental immersion in tank water very little water entered the lamp and I was able to wash out the salt water with fresh RO water completely. No water entered the LED board. The LCD worked ( I could select modes with the remote ) but I could not view the menu as the LCD apparently died. Contacted Hobbie Bug who responded quickly send me advice on trying to get the LCD screen to work somehow but unfortunately no joy. I then asked for a replacement LCD unit ( which was reasonably priced by them ) and they quickly sen tit out in no more than three days. Very fast and constant communications all the way. I highly recommend this lamp and this company.
