I have never used a wood burning tool before but wanted to create a growth chart for my family..mainly my daughter and future kids. It was really easy to use after watching some YouTube videos but at the same time it came with so many tools I didnt know what to do with them all..plus the instructions didnt show me how to use the tool holder lol..You have to be very careful because the tool holder seems kind of unstable so i used a weight to hold the tool down for stability. You may want to do some research because they have other style of wood burning tools. Also it heats up very hot so it could leave extra heat marks around the burn part. The stencils are too small for my project..I took a picture of it next to the standard sized coloring pencil that came with the package. I also took a picture of the tips that came with it..hopefully it's clear enough for you guys to see. I feel like I should have bought the cheaper seats found on amazon because I didnt need all the extra stuff that came with it..basically it was useless for me and my project. However I am happy I have a set now in case I wanna try to do more projects in the future.

This particular pen has a knob to set the temperature right on the pen. It is small, and honestly I don't think it's overly accurate. I have since noticed that most other pens have the temperature gage on the power supply, and the switches seem much more reliable on those.
The pen also states that it will overheat if you leave it too long... And it didn't tell you how long too long might be, or whether there is a fire risk or the parts would just melt. I've been looking into other low-end pens, and have discovered that most gaurd against overheating. Honestly, even without overheating, I don't expect this tool to last long. I have a new pen coming from a similar price range, and I'm optimistic that it will be better. I will be sure to review it.
The more expensive wood-burners also allow you to hold them closer to the tip, giving you better control. But it is worth trying a cheaper one before you invest the money, just to see if you like the medium.
One of the biggest issues I have had is with the various tips that came with it. Nowhere in the manual does it feel you what each one is for, so you end up having to guess. Because of that, I ended up using a tip that bent when it reached a high temperature and a small amount of pressure was applied. I think it must be meant for soldering, but I didn't know that until I had already damaged it.
Many of these tips don't fit the attached rod meant to screw them to, and it took me a long time to figure out how to actually assemble them. It was frustrating, but I finally figured out what attachment I needed to use them, and how to place it in the pen. I'm not sure why it was necessary to make different thread sizes.
One thing I CAN say for this kit, is that it is very comprehensive. It came with colored pencils, more than a dozen tips, a ton of stencils, a stand, and some small wood pieces to work with. I have definitely made use of the stencils, and I am grateful to have them! Those, at least, should be useful for a long time. The one thing that didn't come in the kit was an eraser, which surprised me; the brief directions that came with the kit instruct you to erase any remaining pencil lines after your done burning them. I had to order a decent eraser to accomplish that.
So in short, this kit is great if you're looking for all of the other materials to round out your supplies. But the pen itself is merely alright. It is enough to get you started and give you an idea of whether you like this enough to continue, though. I do advise buying a work book or manual. I usually figure things out on my own, but I am finding that harder to do with pyrography, especially with the lack of a detailed manual in the set.
Whatever you decide to buy, enjoy delving into this medium! It truly is a lot of fun, and very affordable.
A good set of supplies, but the actual burning pen is merely OK.
