About the Author

J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

I was given this story to read for an english class way back in the 1970's at Taylor Center High School. Being a teenager who did not have a habit of reading, I considered it a drudgery. Man did I have a thing or two to learn! This story has left an impression on me that I still can't shake off. Now in my 50's I have still not forgotten the great lessons learned in Sir J.M.Barrie's "The Admirable Crichton"

Not wanting to give much away to the reader in waiting, pay attention to how the characters are given life by this most gifted writer. I loved it when I first read it, and can't wait to get my hands on it again. I believe you'll enjoy it as well.

I might've expected someone like this from a very young George Bernard Shaw, but certainly not from the author of The Old Woman Shows Her Medals, Peter Pan, and The Little Minister. It's too clever by half, without Barry's romanticism and real feeling for human character. Too, plays must show and not tell; this play tells about half the time. I'd give it a C for Can Do Better.

I have been something of a fan of J.M. Barrie for a long time, and I was quite glad when this book fell into my hands. Barrie is mainly remembered today for his wonderful Peter Pan stories, but his literary talents extended far afield. He wrote this play in 1902 as a social commentary. In it, a haughty, Victorian family is presented, with their upstairs/downstairs, ironclad class prejudices, and no one is more of a supporter of this than their butler Crichton. But, when they are all shipwrecked on a desert island, a new social order is born – what was natural in England is unnatural on the island. And, if they should be rescued, what will happen then?

This play makes an absolutely wonderful read. Mr. Barrie included many sidebars and comments that make the play read just as well as a novel. If you are a fan of pre-1914 British literature (as I am), or just like a cracking good read, then I highly recommend that you get this book!
