This is a hardcover book with a decorative cover and gilt to top page edges published by the Riverside Press Cambridge of Houghton Mifflin Company in 1942. There are black and white illustrations, a bibliography and index. The author, Elting E. Morison, was married to Anne Hitchcock Sims, daughter of U.S. Admiral William Sims, and this biography which was published in 1942 a few months after the Pearl Harbor Attack, becoming the standard scholarly biography. the book documents Sims's naval career, which started at the US naval Academy and his service at the China Station, during World War I ND a President of the War College. It was during his time as the Naval War College that he wrote and published his book The Victory at Sea which describes his experiences in World War I. In 1921 The Victory at Sea won the Pulitzer Prize for History.
