This book was a life saver for me. I have been endlessly researching adoption for the last three weeks (read three books, spoke to agencies, researched on the internet) but had come up against a brick wall. All the information I had come across was very general. The general overview was a great start, but did nothing to help me decide which adoption path was best for us or exactly how to go about it with the least amount of financial and emotional risk. I was overwhelmed and dizzy from all the information available but clueless as to how to find my way and pursue an adoption that would work for us - or at all. I came across this book at my local library and it was so immensely helpful that I will be purchasing it from Amazon to keep in my permanent library!

The book provides a detailed breakdown of all of your different adoption options, giving the most thorough explanation I have come across as to all the different ways adoption can actually happen (not just the three major categories most books/articles talk about). He then gives you the understanding and resources you need to start to pursue an adoption that will work for you and your personal situation. It is a lifesaver! I no longer feel confused or overwhelmed by everything and finally feel like I have information I can work with to start crafting a workable adoption plan. He also provides detailed information on how to protect yourself both financially and emotionally. This book is like having your own, personal adoption consultant. What a lifesaver this book is! It is a must-have in any adoption library. Thank you, Mr. Hicks!

I really enjoyed this book. It's written by an experienced adoption attorney in California who has also written other books on adoption. It is detailed: describes 14 types of adoption, using an attorney or an agency (or both), red flags to watch out for, sample photo-resume letter and networking letters, strategies to find a baby to adopt, legal issues, state by state info, etc. Personally I liked it better than the Idiot's Adoption book which I also own (not that the Idiot's and Dummies books aren't good, I just like this author's style of writing and detailed descriptions better). This booked taught me a lot of about how to go about adopting and made me feel hopeful that it is possible to have a happy outcome.
