“This book consolidates Stephanie Moulton Sarkis’s expertise and experience into a ‘first step’ guide for those diagnosed as an adult with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). An important contribution for ADHD adults, this book is easy to read, with concise sections that allow readers to quickly grasp important information. This book is an excellent starting point for newly diagnosed adults with ADHD and family members hoping to understand the disorder.”
—David W. Goodman, MD, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and director at Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Center of Maryland
“While there have been several good adult ADHD introductory books, Sarkis’s new guide provides updated value in a rapidly advancing field. In addition to explaining just what to do, she skillfully advises about how to work through the process, highlighting the importance of ongoing personal and professional helping relationships.”
—Richard L. Rubin, MD, vice president of the American Professional Society for ADHD and Related Disorders and adjunct associate professor of Dartmouth Medical College
“If you’ve just been diagnosed with ADD, you need this book. It will guide you step by step through understanding the diagnosis and the best treatments for you. This book will help you find hope and figure out your next steps.”
—Lara Honos-Webb, Ph.D., author of The Gift of Adult ADD
“The first and most important thing the newly diagnosed can do is to educate themselves about ADHD. But where to begin? In a thoroughly accessible and practical way, Sarkis covers all the major topics. This is a great first book to read after being diagnosed with ADHD because it gives you the lay of the land and guides you toward the topics you may want to learn more about.”

- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2019I was recently diagnosed with ADD at 49. I have spent what seems like my whole life trying to cope with work-arounds and time crunches! I finally hit a brick wall. I felt like I had taken on more than I could possibly handle - ADD people we think we are great multi-taskers! This book helped me understand what steps my doctor would possibly take? How women are often misdiagnosed as depressed? It helped to understand what or if I needed medication or if I wanted to take medication for this condition? The possibilities for other alternative solutions for no- brakes on the brain kind of folks like me. Diet, Food, better sleep? It is a simply written straight forward guide on what to expect moving on with your life once you are diagnosed. This book was a relief after hearing that I had ADD? I hope it can help everyone who has a family member of who is diagnosed.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2023It's funny to read in the book itself that I'm in the stage where I'm online and searching for material about ADHD and finding books to read! Also funny that before therapy and medication I would have never read this book let alone leave a review...
This is a great place to start! A reference guide for us, a written outline to guide us. Thank you DR. Stephanie Sarkis.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2012We have read this book from cover to cover and are sharing it around our family -- to get them to understand ADD better. It doesn't a good job with this. Thanks much! Recommend as a great help!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2011I was diagnosed with Adult ADD in 2011. This book gives you a good idea of what to expect and what tips and medications you can use to help you with this disorder. I've had the disorder for years. I read the list of symptoms and it all hit spot on. Amazing that no one caught it before. Must have been a bunch of idiots. Now my life can move forward and i know what to look for and what to expect.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015An easy read primarily because it reviews info that, if you have known you have ADD for some time before, is redundant. It did however give additional interesting info in the latter chapters that was enlightening. In other words, the book is appropriately named...for the newly diagnosed.

JonesReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 20225.0 out of 5 stars Essential and positive reading. Easy to read through.
I was a little worried that researching ADHD may make me feel down about the condition. This book has done the opposite. It has increased my confidence in my previous life choices, allowed me to be kinder to myself for my struggles, given me additional tools for the future and highlighted the many positives of having this 'disability'. I appreciated the insight that each person on the planet inherits 'something'. This is just our 'thing'. It is also important to remember that it is the environment and culture which makes a 'thing' a disability. With the right tools we can all thrive.
This book is very engaging I got through it quickly as each chapter is short and ADD friendly.
