A central source of frustration for most adults with ADHD is that they know what they need to do but they have difficulties turning their intentions into actions. These difficulties also interfere with their ability to use self-help books and to get the most out of psychosocial treatments that provide coping strategies that promise to improve their functioning. Drs. Ramsay and Rostain are experts in the assessment and treatment of adult ADHD and are leaders in the development of effective psychosocial treatments for this group of patients. Their newest book, The Adult ADHD Tool Kit: Using CBT to Facilitate Coping Inside and Out is a coping guide for adults living with ADHD, one that does not just present useful coping strategies but also provides specific tactics designed to help readers implement these skills in their daily lives and brings them to life in a user-friendly format. The authors discuss many different settings in which ADHD may cause difficulties, including work, school, matters of physical health and well-being, and the issue of excessive use of technology. Although written for consumers, clinicians will find the book to be a clinically useful tool for their adult patients with ADHD, serving as a companion to the newly updated and expanded second edition of Drs. Ramsay and Rostain’s professional treatment manual, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Adult ADHD: An Integrative Psychosocial and Medical Approach.

Review

"In over 35 years of treating adults with ADHD, I have never come across a better resource than Ramsay and Rostain’s The Adult ADHD Tool Kit. After an excellent presentation of foundational processes such as planning, time management, procrastination, motivation, organization, and challenging distorted beliefs, they creatively apply these techniques to coping in college, the workplace, relationships, and health. They also address the excessive use of technology and the role of medication for treating adult ADHD. Adults with ADHD and the professionals treating them will benefit greatly from Drs. Ramsay and Rostain’s wisdom. Don’t leave home without this tool kit."

Arthur L. Robin, PhD, is the director of psychology training at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

"This book is the real deal. Ramsay and Rostain are clinicians and researchers and bring the best of each to the often confusing and frustrating challenges of ADHD. They offer strategies that aren’t just nice ideas―they really work."

Ari Tuckman, PsyD, MBA, author of Understand Your Brain, Get More Done; More Attention, Less Deficit; and Integrative Treatment for Adult ADHD.

"This toolkit holds the tools for facing the challenges of adult ADHD and contains wisdom of true pioneers of ADHD treatment. The ideas and techniques in this book can transform an overwhelming life to one of hope and confidence."

Craig Surman, MD, is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the coauthor of Fast Minds: How to Thrive If You Have ADHD (Or Think You Might).

"Drs. Ramsay and Rostain take the reader on an insightful and comprehensive journey through overcoming some of the major pitfalls associated with adult ADHD (including time management, organization, and self-care). Readers will find themselves engaged and entertained by the authors' use of metaphor and examples from pop culture, which also helps to solidify ideas for later recall. The book is chock full of quick and simple takeaways, reminding readers of the most important tactics from each section."

Abigail Levrini, PhD, is the clinical director at Psych Ed Coaches and author of Succeeding with Adult ADHD: Daily Strategies to Help You Achieve Your Goals and Manage Your Life.

ADHD friendly (sort of) with lots of useful ideas
I was worried this wouldn’t be an ADHD friendly read and in some ways it is, some ways it isn’t. The end of each chapter has a highlight and review section that touches the main points, which is so nice! But the actual chapter material is soooo long and the words are small. It’s almost too much on a single page. It’s daunting to read and loses my attention easily. That’s probably more me than the book though. The material IS helpful and useful so I’m very pleased with the book.

This book has been a gift and the cornerstone of me understanding myself. It has helped me break down some tasks that have stayed stuck and taken up space in my body and mind for far too long. It is a bit expensive but it is also so helpful, reads like a college text in some ways but also reads like a best friend is giving you some tools to help.

Like other ppl have said, this is not an easy book for ppl with adhd. However, imo it has a lot of useful tips. Even though it took me more than a year to finish all of the chapters, I'm really proud of myself, and I found this book so useful that I actually put it at my desk and review it often.

Points that really struct my core:
    - You need two lists, one for dumping all of your todos and one for your daily planning.
    - If you think some of your items may become useful one day, they won't, give up, throw them away.
    - If you mess up your tax, the IRS won't forgive you because you have adhd.
    - Check your mail everyday and process them immediately. My personal example: I found a $400 check in a mail that I received a year ago. I didn't realized that the check has expired and deposited it online. It bounced back and cost me $15 fee... :(

One thing that I wish is included in this book is budgeting, but hey adhd impacts every aspect of our lives and it's impossible to cover everything. I'm very thankful for what this book has already offered.

The irony of this book is that it was meant for psychologists and counselors , so it’s VERY clinical and VERY tedious to get through, so NOT the best voice for someone with ADHD!

However I have found the tips to be helpful. I skip over some of the boring or repetitive clinical parts and read a little bit every day in my bedroom each morning b4 I even check my phone (aka the rabbit hole!). They really should create a workbook for those with ADHD. This is NOT really written for those who suffer from this disorder and that’s the biggest irony.

But if you can get thru it, worth it.

I've read/skimmed several other books on the subject. This one stands out for its very measured, precise writing, conveying a rather clinical, professional but warm and caring approach. Reading this book feels somewhat like being in a doctor's office getting the best advice on how to manage a health condition. I think some of the books on this subject are rather too facile. The authors of this book are professionals in the ADHD field who run a clinic for adults with ADHD. They are authors of a guide for other professionals, and they added this as a companion guide geared more toward the ADHD sufferer. I feel lucky to have found it.

I've been reading it during available free time for 2 days and I'm on page 22 of the 173, densely-packed pages (not counting appendices, index etc.). The first thing I did was check through the whole book for print quality issues (based on a negative review I read here) to reassure myself that there were no missing pages. As for the price and overall print quality, I agree it is expensive. For a book this size, I would have expected a price of $15. On the other hand, it reads like much more than a self-help book. It is a book by clinical professionals, based on all the latest clinical research in this area. It is approached in a very serious, thorough way, including literature citations. By that standard, the $36 price tag seems understandable. I disagree that the small size and dense print are a problem. To the contrary, it is an enjoyable, portable book to curl up with or carry around to read during in-between moments throughout the day. Just be sure to keep some sticky page markers, or a pencil, to mark helpful tips as you encounter them. I do not feel the book seems cheap in quality, despite the fact that it was printed on demand a few days before it arrived.

Aside from the professional background that went into the preparation of this book, it seems to really stand apart for its sincere effort to tackle in a very thorough way, the key disconnect that afflicts ADHD sufferers, namely, the problem of "I know what I need to do, but for some reason I just fail to do it". They go through innumerable small aspects of everyday life, with an eye for addressing this challenge. No doubt, most of their tips are things you and I have thought of before. But the whole approach is so coherent, serious, and thorough that it gives me more hope than I have ever had for managing my ADHD. I'll add more to this review when (or if) I get to the end of the book. In the meantime I find it highly readable, with warmth and the occasional dose of humor.

Over the past few weeks, I have been working through this book with my therapist. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 15 (I’m now 30) and this book had taught me so much about myself and how ADHD affects my life. It has provided me with some excellent coping skills and made me feel less alone. It has also done wonders for my anxiety. If you struggle with ADHD, please give this book a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bestes Selbsthilfebuch welches ich je gelesen habe - auch ohne ADHS
Reviewed in Germany on February 23, 2022
