Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes! This book is sweet, funny, sexy, and heartbreaking. I love love love it!
What did you like best about this story?
Nick and Jai developed a wonderful relationship after a very un-romantic beginning. Their growth as a couple is beautiful.
Which scene was your favorite?
The final scene, when Jai surprises Nick in a sweet and wonderful way. I won't spoil it, but it made me smile and blink back happy tears.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I'm greedy like that. I made myself only listen in the car, though. Audiobooks are my reward for not going postal in traffic.
Any additional comments?
This is a great story by Lisa Henry, who is a wonderful author. Nick J. Russo does a fantastic job bringing all the characters, especially Nick and Jai, to life.
Nick is this perfect self-centered, stream-of-consciousness, little impulse control 18-year-old who should be annoying...but whom I end up loving. He and Devon's friendship is so hilarious & beautiful.
This is a coming-of-age tale that is a perfect balance of silly, awkward, heart-breaking, and honest, and so 21st century. I am very glad I bought this book.
Overall, Adulting 101 is a fantastic example of new adult literature, balancing laugh-out-loud humor and steamy erotica with the complex emotional turbulence of emerging adulthood. Nick and Jai's characters are complex and fully developed, and their experiences relatable for many young adults. I would recommend this book to any teen or 20-something struggling with the transition to adulthood, and who wants some adorable romance and whimsical humor to go along with it.
I absolutely adored both leading men, Nick and Jai. Nick is so adorably confused about nearly everything in his life, but he is remarkably confident in how much he wants Jai. Nick is 18, and one character describes him as a “young” 18, which I would agree with. Despite this, he isn’t irritating. The author side steps the pitfalls of many other writers by avoiding going too far with the “teenager” stereotype and Nick is refreshing and enjoyable because of it.
Jai is almost too good to be true. He’s gorgeous, laid back, accepting of Nick’s many and varied foibles, and honest about his feelings. See what I mean? Too good to be true. But it works. It works in the way that Jai and Nick just work. They make sense. I could give Lisa Henry a standing ovation for skipping the (OMG, so overdone) break up and get back together because of misunderstanding-stupidity-other people—age difference-whatever. I LOVE that they got together, and despite life not going exactly the way they planned, they roll with it together. I also love that while their age different was apparent in their personalities; they didn’t make it The Thing that the novel revolved around.
A coming of age story, a romance/first love story, a dash of enduring friendship, and you’ve got a great little book. The only thing I would wish for was more, and that’s what I always want when I finish something I really enjoyed.
