Advanced Brazilian Jiujitsu Techniques Paperback – November 15, 2011
Through detailed narrative and more than 2,000 step-by-step color photographs, Marcelo breaks down the arm drag, methods for taking and sustaining back control, finishes from the back, and a plethora of takedowns and guard passes. Leaving no stone unturned, he also sheds new light on the guillotine choke and omoplata submissions.
To avoid watering down the pages with redundant transitions and submissions that are well known and widely taught in jiu-jitsu schools across the globe, Marcelo only covers the techniques that are unique to his system. Unlike a lot of jiu-jitsu systems, which include techniques that are limited in range and application, each submission covered in this technical manual is practical and guaranteed to work on opponents both large and small. Having competed in the Absolute Open Weight Division his entire life, Marcelo discarded the techniques that didnÆt work on larger, stronger opponents. What you are left with is a highly effective and efficient system of grappling that works for and on everyone. Let Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu elevate your grappling game to the next level.

About the authors

I write books about martial arts and about marketing. As a kid, I never really fit in, and I used to think that was my greatest weakness. Now, as an author, content marketing consultant, and business owner, I realize that not fitting in is actually my greatest strength. As a result, most of my work has an underdog theme that celebrates going against the grain and doing something different.

Glen Cordoza is a New York Times and Wall Street Journal Best Selling author, and a former professional mixed martial artist and Muay Thai boxer. He is one of the most published authors on the topics of MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and fitness with twenty books to his credit.

When I purchased this book, I had some familiarity with standing game as a wrestler at our club regularly taught us the basics of wrestling. Still, during live rolls, I was still wary of going for the single or double leg shot - if I failed, I was in for hard times. I did not feel comfortable shooting without the repetition wrestlers get in month after month. I was looking for some material to supplement my standing game for the BJJer. This book was it.
Highly recommended for BJJers who want to improve their standing game - Marcelo goes over most of the good stuff wrestlers have been doing since they were born, but maybe news to BJJers. His section on arm drags was a game changer for me. If you get it right, you're on his back already - wow. Passing the guard is for suckers.
As noted elsewhere, Marcelo only goes over a few techniques but he goes into the details and variations, a mind map of his aggressive game. The prefaces of each chapter are nicely written and enjoyable in of themselves, elaborating on his fighting philosophy and reasoning behind his method and technique choices.
The techniques in this book are more of a "complete" game showing the practical innovations Marcelo brings to sport BJJ. The authors have done an excellent job of explaining complex techniques in precise detail to make them effective, useful, and available to every BJJ practitioner. There are pages and pages dedicated to common positions that anyone who spends time on the mats finds themselves in, but with the details that make Marcelo Garcia so great and the proper attention to detail to make it available for every level.
The breakdown in this book is second to none that can truly be used to advance your game to the next level. Each section dedicates so much time and effort into explaining, in excellent detail, extremely useful and functional techniques that are obviously proven in competition. Pick this up today, it will help you from every position, every angle and compliment your game.
I am very small person (55 kg and less than 170 cm tall). I am the smallest fighter in my gym until today, but by using rnc and back mount i can submit 70,80 even 95 kg.
My fighting style is very similar to Marcelo, try to get back mount and finish it with RNC. Marcelo didn't use power to submit but he used technique. He was a champion is absolute class several times, so i believe his technique is not just theory.
My conclusion about this book: if you are a fighter want to fight like Marcelo, if you want to master Marcelo style you must have this book.

This book really needs to be read with MG's other book "The X Guard". Whereas that book sets out his bottom game, this book sets out his top / standing game with no techniques from guard.
Although this book features MG wearing a gi on the cover, very little of the technique it contains is gi-specific. So if, like me, you mainly train no gi, it's still useful.
I think the label 'Advanced' is potentially a bit misleading. Doing these techniques well is going to be difficult and take a lot of practise - but that's true of any BJJ technique. But the techniques aren't particularly obscure, esoteric or complicated. Rather, the moves all seem to be high % and reflect scenarios which come up all the time. This book is 'advanced' in the sense that it gives a break down of the strategy or reasoning which underlies each technique, discusses each technique in detail and explains how it fits into MG's competition game - detail which might go over the head of someone who was just starting out in BJJ.
