This book provides a fundamental understanding of global illumination algorithms. It discusses a broad class of algorithms for realistic image synthesis and introduces a theoretical basis for the algorithms presented. Topics include: physics of light transport, Monte Carlo methods, general strategies for solving the rendering equation, stochastic path-tracing algorithms such as ray tracing and light tracing, stochastic radiosity including photon density estimation and hierarchical Monte Carlo radiosity, hybrid algorithms, metropolis light transport, irradiance caching, photon mapping and instant radiosity, beyond the rendering equation, image display and human perception. If you want to design and implement a global illumination rendering system or need to use and modify an existing system for your specific purpose, this book will give you the tools and the understanding to do so.

Fast Shipping but the Condition of the Book Received is Unsatisfactory (Wrinkles, Severe Stains)

Fast Shipping but the Condition of the Book Received is Unsatisfactory (Wrinkles, Severe Stains)
I am disappointed with the condition of the book I received. There are noticeable black stains on the back cover and some pages inside the book. Additionally, I found wrinkles on approximately 50 pages. Despite the fast shipping, the overall state of the book is not good, which is disappointing.

This is, by far, the best global illumination theory/algorithms book available. The book covers techniques and theories that are at the foundation of all modern renderers. It also provides some nice psuedo-code that demonstrates how to translate theory into code.

The book does have some math, but it is VERY well explained(I'm not a math god by any means, yet I found the equations easy to follow because the authors build an intuitive understanding before hitting you with the equations). A basic calculus course is all you need to get through this book.

This book is NOT an Open GL, DirectX API book. It's a book that focuses on rendering techniques and theory, and it does a great job.

This book thoroughly covers the macroscopic physics of light transport, hemispherical coordinates, and statistics, not to mention several global illumination algorithms in depth. Although it might not be a perfect introduction to the basics of ray tracing, stochastic ray tracing is covered as well. This book is probably best targeted to those interested in extending their ray tracers to include global illumination or those looking to understand the radiosity algorithm.

I think this one is the good, formal and systemic book for this area.

The book itself is great. Everything is explained very clear, and there are enough examples to get rid of any uncertainties you had.
Now, I actually wanted to give this 3 stars, but it wouldn't do the book much justice, because it's not the book's fault.
The reason for the 3 stars is the Kindle edition, which simply sucks. (Sorry for my choice of words)
Everything in the Kindle edition seems fine, until you encounter formulas. When you zoom, the normal text scales just as it's supposed to, the formulas don't. Result: big, nice, readable text and small, have-to-make-an-effort-to-read formulas.
And I really don't understand why it wouldn't scale accordingly, the formulas are clearly vectorized...

tl;dr Buy the physical book, not the Kindle version

This review is for the second edition text, but I am putting it here since the page for that book does not yet yet have a place for customer reviews.

First off, the two prior reviews for this text are highly suspect. The text is basically a collection of highly complex mathematical formulas with little explanation. The physics, statistics, and calculus courses I took for my computer science degree were not nearly adequate preparation for this book. Even after dusting off my old math books and trying to refamiliarize myself with the content, the first few chapters were nearly impossible to trudge through. Perhaps this text could serve as a reference if you were already a professional in the field, but as any sort of learning aid, it is completely useless.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent description of a difficult field
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 1, 2013
Going beyond the basic lightning models (Gouraud and Phong, among others) means passing from a phenomenological model to a deductive one. Also means passing from a simple geometrical models to more advanced ones. This text is an excellent guide to that mathematical world, inside it you will not find the ready-to-use algorithms but the mathematical models on which they are based, well exposed and organized with a precious bibliography. There are numerous hints to help you implementing the models on your code but will only make sense to you if you do have a good mathematical background.
Not a book I would recommend to the average programmer but excellent if rendering is your job and you are aiming to the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars À avoir dans sa bibliothèque lorsqu'on débute dans ce monde

Ouvrage de qualité dont la reliure est d'une excellente facture. On aurait aimé (enfin, lorsqu'on débute)
davantage d'explications sur les méthodes QMC et d'autres modèles que les classiques Cook & Torrance et Ward.
Les méthodes de MC / Path Tracing y sont bien détaillées avec le source en C++. Un livre à avoir, l'un des
meilleurs.

If you want to go through the maths and techniques of global illumination this is probably the most in-depth book you can get. You can find some of the content in the 4th edition of Real-time Rendering, but that book still refers you to this one.
