''In his brief, engrossing eyewitness-to-history-style memoir, An Adventure in 1914
, American lawyer T. Tileston Wells recounts his experience in Europe at the outbreak of World War I. His recollections are fleshed out and amplified for contemporary readers by way of an introduction and numerous historical notes by his great-grandson, Christopher Kelly....An Adventure in 1914 is a concise and vivid snapshot of an era and of events that have too often been overshadowed by more recent wars.''
''A charming memoir of an American family holiday in Europe just as WW1 breaks out. Beautifully edited & illustrated.'' --Andrew Roberts, author of Napoleon the Great and many other books
From the Author
An Adventure in 1914
is, by far. my most personal book. It contains and was inspired by a memoir written by my great-grandfather, Thomas Tileston Wells over one hundred years ago. He was a New York lawyer who was traveling through Europe with his wife and two children when World War I broke out. He wrote about the impact of the war on his family and on ordinary people.
In 2015 I had the opportunity to travel in his footsteps along the route of his journey taking photographs and gathering information. His memoir is a message in a bottle from the past that is startlingly relevant to our own times.
The experience of writing and researching the book was a voyage of discovery for me. Much of what I thought I knew about Wells proved to be wrong.
I wrote and Introduction and provided commentary to provide historical context for the modern reader. This book contains photographs, maps, and even a few recipes. I hope that you will enjoy this gift from our family!
