- the moleskin wasn’t It pre cut, and there are no scissors in the kit to cut it.
- Everything is just jumbled in a plastic bag. You would have to dump everything out in order to find anything. It would be really difficult to find a specific medication or bandaid under stress or with one hand.
- the plastic liner on mine was the bag for the .7 ultralight kit, with the contents of the sportsmans kit (from what I can tell). This makes it extremely hard to fit everything in the bag and seal it up.
Overall I am disappointed compared to the other adventure medical products I have used.
If the organization and container were better I would give this a 5 star review, but I am taking two stars off, since they would really make this kit difficult to use in the field.
A Sam splint, and bleeding control is important to me, and I feel should be added.
I own quite a few first aid kits from Johnson & Johnson who's band-aids rock! To kits From REI and a nice sports refill from Survival metrics, up to full EMT kits for home use. Choosing the right kit does take a little time. Fist and most important is to figure out you use of it? home, car, work, outdoors, a mommy boo boo kit or survival or minor surgery out in the woods or?? as all kits are very different in price, size and quality. The most pieces for the money usually gets you poor quality items. Not all kits will fit your needs perfectly so aim for the closest and add as you need. Soft kits are great for hiking or if in a safe place were not to get squished! A hard case is perfect in the car or house in case it gets tossed around.
So far, this kit has the best quality bags inside and out. They show 2 bags which is not for the .7 kit, this kit is ONE bag of items. The .9 is two bags with room for your own stuff as well. I added meds to this pack as you get 3 ibuprofen, 1 aspirin, and 2 antihistamines. Hiking in the sun can bring a few headaches, so the more people the more meds. As far as the Moleskin it says pre-cut and shaped, not in my pack, I got 1 square sheet of it, that's it. The tincture of benzoin topical adhesive was also missing as a few butterfly's as well, but they have great customer service- so no problem. Also check your kit thoroughly as the company will substitute items as needed to keep production going, so you might be missing one thing but have something else that's not listed on pack to make up for it.
Bottom line: Worth the money & Great quality!
* Nylon case and zipper seem water resistant, and inner plastic bag makes the items in the kit waterproof.
* Contents are comprehensive for basic first aid.
* Case is large enough to add additional items such as a trauma kit, meds, etc.
* Lightweight
Cons:
* No organization so you sort of have to fish through the contents to find what you need.
Overall, it's a great product and I plan to include in my day hike pack.
Four notes about the kit:
1. It's bigger than it looks in the picture (8.5"W, 5.5"H, 3.25"D, and 18" circumference around width, 15" circumference around top/bottom). So, it's about the size of a medium fanny-pack. I thought it might fit in my motorcycle tank bag, but it ended up going in a tail bag instead.
2. The outer bag is not waterproof, but it does a good job of keeping normal dirt and debris out of the bag. The inner bags (two of them) are zip-lock style bags that are completely waterproof.
3. Although not clearly visible in the pictures, the outer bag has a nylon loop at each end of the zipper that can be used for hanging or securing the bag. I didn't notice them before purchasing the bag, so they were a nice surprise.
4. There are two sizes of adhesive bandages in the kit: the knuckle bandage (1.5 x 3"), and the "one-size-fits-most" general-purpose bandage (1x3"). The general purpose is fairly large and is a tough fit for smaller hands/fingers (e.g. kids or ladies). I suggest adding a few other sizes to your kit to cover the basic cuts and scrapes that happen more frequently.
The bag comes nicely equipped for basic, activity-related injuries. There is extra room in the bag to add your own goodies, so I added two Mylar emergency blankets to my kit. These blankets came in handy during an overnight camping trip when the meteorologists missed the forecasted low by over 20 degrees (temps dropped to about 23F). My son and I sandwiched our sleeping bags between the Mylar blankets to give us a few extra degrees of warmth... mission accomplished.
My verdict: this is a great light-weight kit for hikers, bicyclists, or motorcycle campers. Add a couple of Mylar emergency blankets and a few assorted-size adhesive bandages to make it even better.
