However, the picture quality leaves a lot to be desired. It's only slightly better looking than a standard definition DVD, upscale to 1080p. It's grainy and the print the transfer was taken from was dirty - dust specks and squiggles of hair can be seen in many of the shots.
The sound quality isn't great. I'm mean, you'll never show off your home theater sound system with this movie. However, it's better than expected for a film of it's age. There's a scene or two that will rumble the room and a few scenes with nice rear and overhead sounds placements.
If you're a fan of this movie it's a must have. But perhaps, the studio will create a better transfer when they eventually release a 4K blu-ray version.
THOUGHTS: Another far-reaching fantasy film from Monty Python alumni Terry Gilliam that is much in the same vein as his earlier work, TIME BANDITS, in both look & feel. Film is a parable of the dangers of giving up our ability to see & think for ourselves. The entire cast is spot-on and the ambitious effects wonderfully compliment the outrageous plot. An uncredited Robin Williams is hilarious as the insane King of The Moon. The big budget allows for some impressive full scale sets, battle sequences and ingenious visual F/X to convey the powers & abilities of the blowhard Baron and his uniquely talented companions. It's a wonderful, light-hearted, whimsical fantasy adventure that young adults and anyone young at heart should find endlessly entertaining. A marvelous children's tale that many younger kids, sadly, will likely find too long-winded & boring. There's lots going on but the dialogue scenes will disinterest those with short attention spans.
THE BLU-RAY: Columbia's hi-def transfer for THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN is a strong effort. A stellar remaster that has a very sturdy picture and solid, even sound. A wealth of interesting bonus features up the ante and really make this 20th Anniversary edition a worthwhile purchase. I loved it the first time I saw it and I'm happy to at last have a home video version for my collection that makes the most of the hi-def format and makes the Baron's incredible adventures look & sound even more incredible than ever. 4 STARS
Also for anybody who is a Monty Python fan who likes to collect the Monty Python movies that are not quite Monty Python movies this is a must have for your collection along with Yellow Beard, Eric the Viking, Time bandits, a Fish called Wanda and a few others.
