Like other such books by white cowboys, Nat Love presents himself as a buck wild straight shooing, hard drinking, horse roping, bull dogging, American Indian fighting machine. While some of this material is of some historial value, particularly his description of his childhood in slavery, some of this consists of obviously tall tales. In one outrageous story, our man lassoes a train that drags him along-and he lives to tell about it. Another adventure has him riding his horse directly into a Mexican bar and getting into a shootout with the locals. He is also chummy with the likes of Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Buffalo Bill Cody. The sections regarding his battles with American Indians and Mexicans are not for the PC and typical of its times. He also closes with a patriotic soliloquy of his life up to that point. This makes for classic, if forgotten, folklore.
This is good for reading aloud with a group of people around a camp fire at night with a harmonica playing in the background. Very entertaining. Will Smith needs to make a movie on this.
