I really didn't know what I was expecting but I sure was expecting something...
...and something I got.
First thing you see is a the title screen, "Balto". Hey, I thought the dvd cover said "The Adventures Of The Brave Husky". What am I supposed to call it then?
Next, you'll notice that the animation is atrocious. It looks like it was drawn with Microsoft paint and done with Windows Movie Maker by a 7 year old.
Also, if you keeping watching for a few minutes, there are some static lines that looks like damage from a old, worn out vhs tape. I guess they decided it would be too expensive to record on a new vhs copy of the movie instead of a used up one, as what I was expecting from a cartoon that has lousy animation.
The story is this... The kids in Nome, Alaska are infected with Diphtheria. The doctor says that the medicine will only last for three days and it takes a week to get to the next town to get the medicine. The doctor says that the dogs can retrieve it faster. So, Balto, the protagonist, and Como, the antagonist( I think that's his name, it's hard to tell what the characters are saying sometimes) set out on an exciting adventure to retrieve the medicine and deal with freezing temperatures from an ice storm, wolves, fatigue, hunger, and many other nail-biting dilemmas. Can Balto and Como make it in time to save the children?
Yes, as you thought but Como dies. That's pretty harsh, don't you think?
Another thing I might add is that there are I think 2 voice actors for the whole cast, the girl voice actress and the boy voice actor. The acting is decent but it doesn't make any sense. The girl voice actor does most of the
boy characters in the movie. In fact, the girl plays Como actually. She just masculates her voice a little(like it's really hidden though).
Bottom line, this is so horrible it's great. You will be laughing the whole 30 minutes! I know I did!
And after the cartoon, the credits roll. I didn't really count how many different people were in there( This is one of those dvds where there isn't any rewind feature so I can't check), but there were probably 8-12 different people working on this thing. Go Figures.
Then after that, there are five bonus cartoons at the end including: Betty Boop
(Those are actually what you payed your money for.)
The story was equally bad. Spoiler Alert! All the children in town get sick and the village doctor/dentist ("Dr Scribble Beard") only has enough meds for 3 days but it takes a week to get to the nearest town. Their only hope of saving the kids is if they send the two fastest dogs alone across 400 miles through an ice storm in alaska to get the meds. Luckily the dogs can speak and understand English and they understand the mission. The dogs are also told that if they don't run for 3 days straight without stopping that they will surely die. The doctor doesn't think the dogs will make it and tells everyone that the kids will definitely die. The end of the movie is very sad and ends rather abruptly.
A moment of silence for those who died.
The movie was so bad that we laughed the whole way through it. We laughed at the horrible voices, we laughed at the ridiculous artwork and animation, we laughed at the overly-dramatic story. It was a fun time for all. It has now become a cult favorite and you're sure to enjoy it at all of your parties.
