I bought this copy for my brother because I was astonished by the fact that he (though a lifelong sf/fantasy fan like myself) had never read it. Davidson's stories of Dr.Essterhazy --an aristocratic scholar in an imaginary doublet of Austria-Hungary who solves mysteries with fantastic twists --vary from charming and funny to grim. I do not enjoy the grim ones as much, but overall, I greatly admire the series.

I had the 1973 "Enquiries of Dr. Eszterhazy". The stories were gems but the paper was lousy; the book crumbled away years ago. I had despaired of ever again reading them, until this marvelous book appeared. It not only replaces the "Enquiries", it extends them, with 5 more stories and an Afterword. The additional stories are from Eszterhazy's youth and the tone is a little different from the later ones; Davidson seems not to have decided yet just what role the supernatural will play in Eszterhazy's career. These stories are funny, tragic, moving, and sometimes deep. I advise all lovers of story to meet Eszterhazy and visit the 4th-largest empire in Europe (the Turks are the fifth)

Imagine if phrenology, alchemy, etc., were real sciences

Avram Davidson imagines a world where science is slightly skewed: alchemy works, phrenology (studying the bumps on a skull to determine personality) is a real science, etc. The author takes each "scientific" dead end of the late 19th century (and earlier centuries) and builds witty, cohesive stories around each one. His characters are great and all his plots neatly resolve. The more you know about European history, the more fun you'll get out of his books (Mr. Davidson is, I believe, a professor of an arcane branch of European history).
