This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it. Plus, unlike many of these Dover editions of Thornton Burgess' books, it has honest-to-god original Harrison Cady illustrations.

Harrison Cady did two sets of drawings for this title; 8 color ones, printed on plates, for Little, Brown, of which 4 were later used for Grosset & Dunlap, printed in B&W on plates. Then, Cady redrew those 4 in line drawings for Grosset & Dunlap to print on the text paper stock instead of on plates. Those 4 line drawings are crude by Harrison Cady's standards, compared to the line drawings he did for many other Burgess books.

This Dover edition has the 4 crude line drawings. Some other Dover editions have the illustrations from the B&W plates, and it would have been better if they had done that for this title too. But kudos to Dover for getting it basically right for this title

If you like these illustrations, I'd recommend finding a used copy of the Little, Brown edition too -- mostly to get all 8 original drawings, but also to see them in color as Cady originally drew these.

If you're looking for old editions, the original title was just "Happy Jack".

My love affair with Thornton Burgess' animals started when I was around 7 or 8 - over 60 years ago. There are quite a few books in the series. My favorite was/is Lightfoot the Deer. My sons read the books when they were children and my recent purchases of multiple books are for my grand children. Blessings on Dover Children's Thrift Classics which made it possible for me to fill in the gaps in my collection. I highly recommend these books to all children.

Burgess's stories seem ageless. They were old when I read them and older when my niece enjoyed them. I expect them to captivate the next generation when they are old enough to read chapter books. If you can't find them used in the format of the 1914 edition (the gold standard for me, reproduced, I think, in the '60s), then the Dover books are the next best thing. A wonderful introduction to the animal world--gentle without glossing over the harsh side of the natural world. The animals are humanized to some degree but still behave according to their animal natures.
