Look for other Mark Twain books in our 100th Anniversary Collection.
Mark Twain created the memorable characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn drawing from the experiences of boys he grew up with in Missouri. Set by the Mississippi River in the 1840’s, this tale is a follow-up to his original book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Huckleberry takes off on a raft down the Mississippi with Jim, a slave seeking his freedom. They run into two con artists, the Duke and the King, as they drift southward, and Huck reunites with Tom Sawyer near the end of the book. The book exposes attitudes prevalent at the times, especially racism, and includes coarse language.

If anything, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was even better than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which my kids and I also enjoyed. The pair have been two of our favorite read alouds. The adventures this kid gets up to make for rollicking fun. Once Tom Sawyer pairs up with Huckleberry Finn again, the story takes the adventure to a whole new level. You never know what Tom Sawyer is going to suggest next and poor Huckleberry Finn just has to go along with me.

(I have gotten pretty good at substituting words while reading aloud. We talked about the word used in the book not being a nice word and talked about the historical context on the story, but I did substitute words while reading it aloud.)

I read the Seawolf Press edition, which has the original illustrations. The illustrations are so neat and the edition is wonderfully put together. I can't recommend these editions highly enough. I love facsimile editions and Seawolf Press puts out some of the best.

I’m only reviewing how the book arrived. Mostly was great, some pages had just fallen out and some were printed slightly crooked.

Book for college, child likes to have the books not kindle

This book is a masterpiece work of Mark Twain. I quickly flipped thru checking all the illustrations & couldn't find anything at all truly racist or objectionable. The illustrations are slightly caricature in type with no malice or offense intended. The book reflects the time frame & positions held at that time. The worst illustration could be the older white female teacher who looks like a real meanie--such you have never seen before--far more funny than malicious or offensive. This is a real gem at a good price. Amazon never fails sending me "new" paperback books that have been flipped thru, slightly dirty all over, with thumb-bent covers! Leave it to Amazon to never fail on this! 5 stars for the author of the book! One star for amazon "new" paperback books. Why doesn't amazon shrink wrap new books when they come in--especially the paperback ones. Rarely do I get a real new paperback book when I order. Most "new" paperback books come somewhat dirty & thumb bent.

For anyone who thinks this book is racist, I would say you missed the point. Huck struggles against what society tells him is the "right" thing to form a friendship with Jim and try to free him from slavery and captivity. He does the right thing, even though he's been raised that it's wrong. Twain was an abolitionist who wrote this after emancipation to address the negative feelings people had towards freed slaves. However, it is still very applicable today.

The Sea Wolf Press edition is fabulous! The font is easy to read and there is room to make annotations if you like to do that. The illustrations are amusing (garter snakes with buttons tied to their tails!) and they add to the story.

Twain is a masterful story teller. This book has so many layers. You could read it several times and still find something new, interesting, or thought provoking. Being from the Mississippi River side of Missouri, the descriptions are spot on, especially the storm on the island. I've seen those storms when the world turns all blue-black... And shouldn't we all live like Huck - doing the right thing even if society says it's wrong and treating others like equals, or even friends? What a world that would be!

Die Druckqualität "matt" finde ich immer etwas komisch. Ich wähle grundsätzlich "glänzend", weil das Cover dann besser rauskommt. Aber ansonsten ist das Papier gut und der Druck scharf. Was will man mehr ;)
