Dr. Michael White is one of the leading musicians playing in and expanding traditional New Orleans jazz. His clarinet is warm and expressive; and while he has developed his own voice, he has clearly absorbed the plaintive fragile tone of George Lewis and the more muscular blues improvisations of Johnny Dodds. "Adventures in New Orleans Jazz" is an interesting album, and I like Dr. White's attempts to widen the standard repertoire by including songs such as
The Midnight Special" and Hank Williams' Jambalaya."

My holding back one star reflects a slight disappointment with the album, a feeling that some of the performances seem facile, don't have the musical daring to really qualify as adventures. The tone on "The Midnight Special" seems too smooth, doesn't fully convey a song about men in prison longing for freedom. Perhaps part of the problem is that there doesn't seem to be a regular band, knowing and working off each others' ideas. There are several musicians who seem to dart in or out of each song, and this conveys a sense of random studio personnel.

This CD was led by the amazing Dr. Michael White who put together an all-star band including Detroit Brooks on banjo, Greg Stafford on trumpet, Steve Pistorius on piano and lots of others. In it we can see a good showing of Dr. White's harmonious slow dance numbers like track four "Petite Fleur", well done mid tempo numbers like track seven "Me and Bobby McGee", and upbeat tunes like track nine "Tiger Rag".

Why three stars instead of five? Basically the mixing, credited on the dust jacket to Mark Bingham, is not the best. Any song played with the string bass consists mostly of bass with the rest of the band in the background. If God had meant string basses to be amped he would have included humbucker pickups in their basic schematics on day eight of creation. And really, why amp drums? Over-amping these two instruments gives the net effect of the listener sitting behind the front row in front of the bassist and the drummer.

(I've noticed this over-amping to a greater or lesser extent on some other artist's CDs as well as Dr. Lewis' work and so would make the comment that this type mixing would sound right to someone playing in the band but not someone in the audience. So as a word of caution I would think it always best to let an audience member rather than a band member have final word about the mix.)

Not limited to music written by composers from New Orleans, Dr. Michael White transforms popular songs into New Orleans jazz. Fun to listen to.

I could play this CD (and three others by Dr. Michael White) 24/7! Dr. White has truly captured the sound of great New Orleans jazz -- performing traditional favorites, as well as some new ones. Love, love, love his music!
