I'm an award winning secondary Computing & ICT Teacher and Education Pioneer at the Raspberry Pi Foundation. I helped to create a scheme of work for KS3 to teach programming theory using the Pi as a synthesizer called Sonic Pi, an idea developed by Sam Aaron at Cambridge University. I am the author of 'Adventures in Raspberry Pi' an award winning computing book for teenagers wanting to get started with Raspberry Pi and programming. As an advocate for women in tech, I created a YouTube video series for teenage girls called The Geek Gurl Diaries, which has won a Talk Talk Digital Hero Award. The episodes include interviews with women working in technology and hands on computer science based tutorials. I am vice chair of the Computing At Schools initiative to get more girls and minority groups into computing called CAS #include and have helped organise #define, a workshop based hack day for teenagers concentrating on delivering good content to include all and 'Hack the Curric' bringing academics, educators and industry experts together to create inclusive resources for the new Computing curriculum. In 2012 I became a Google Certified Teacher and KS3 ICT subject Leader at my school in East London. I have a blended and open approach to teaching as can be seen by my website ICT with Miss P that students use to access their weekly lessons. I use innovative web tools to help support and extend the learning in my 21st century classroom. I'm an evangelist for my subject, and often speak at conferences like BETT, Raspberry Jamboree, YRS and PyconUK.

It's OK. I bought this book based on all of the glowing reviews here. My son is 12 and already has some Scratch experience, so thinking this would be the perfect intro to the RPi we got to go with it.

Unfortunately, much of the first chapter or two is wasted on setup of the pi (which we did together in a matter of minutes without the book) and much of the projects are really low-level introductions. He was done with the book by the end of the first day. A lot of the content can

If your son/daughter has experience already, this may be a little too basic. I can see how this would be a great book for first time (ever) with programming/computers though.

As a new purchaser of a Raspberry Pi 3, I wanted a book to get me started. Looking at some of the other books listed in this category, I eventually settled on purchasing this one. Once I started to get into it, though, examples in the book did not match up with what I saw on my screen. I originally gave the book a pass, maybe it was outdated compared to the interface changes. Later on in the Python section, I saw that the output in the examples in the book did not match up with the coding that was written on just the previous page. For instance, on one page you create a list of items. On the next page, you print that list to your screen. However, the output listed does not match the input you give on just the previous page. While the syntax was correct, the lack of detail-orientation on this kind of item makes the book fall short.

In closing, I recommend passing on this book. There are too many errors like the example above to give it an honest recommendation.

I love the book. I think it really is a great guide to the Raspberry Pi that children from 11 upwards could follow. My only problem is that the Raspberry Pi itself is not working terrifically with sound. I had to buy a Creative Sound Blaster card to begin to get sound to work. It may be different for you as the software is constantly upgraded and the teething problems get sorted.
