Review
Two Chihuahuas engage the animals of Bald Head Island, N.C., in a plan to stop illegal turtle-egg traffickers in this playful debut children's adventure book aimed at dog lovers and budding environmental advocates. A charming talking-animal tale, with gentle messages about family and the environment. - Kirkus
Four Stars (out of Five)
This book takes an authentic issue and wraps it in a nicely woven story that doesn't talk
down to children. Young readers will enjoy the lively banter among the animals, especially
between Moc and the dogs. Canter has come up with a formula that that should be equally successful in future books featuring these two curious pups. Upper elementary-aged students will most likely enjoy the adventures of Bennett and Lola and may not even realize they are learning science and history facts at thesame time. - ForeWord Clarion

Using animals in human roles is nothing new and it is a tried and true formula for children's books. The Adventures of Starfoot and Brown by Rhonda Canter is one of the best new children's books if this genre this season. If your child is just beginning to read chapter books this one is a great find. The book starts with a writer who adopts two Chihuahuas. She takes them with her when she goes to Bald Head Island. This is where she goes to write. This is where the fun begins, the dogs take on aliases and sets out to solve local crimes. They meet some of the local animals and engage in an attempt to stop turtle trafficking.
The writing in hilariously funny and kids will want to read it over and over again.Perfect for birthdays or a just because gift.

Cora Howder is a writer with two energetic Chihuahuas. When she went to Bald Head Island to research her next book, her Chihuahuas went on an adventure. They became detectives, and changed their names. They met up with local wildlife and saved some baby turtle eggs from being stolen. This was a cute story for children who are learning to read chapter books. The only drawback was when one dog continually bullied another. Even though there is a hierarchy in the animal kingdom, I fear that children will emulate the behavior.

The author clearly as a wonderful insight into what captivates the mind and attention of children.
Animals always have a special place in a child's heart, and nowhere better than this book.
The island the author takes you to is quite wonderful, and certainly excited my young boy I read the book to.
With delightful characters and a plot full of clever twists, this is a book for anyone young at heart.
I recommend this book for all parents with young children since it teaches many good values.

At first I thought what an interesting story to read for my nephews , but as I read along I also began enjoying the adventures of starfoot and brown.
What a great way to not only tell a lovely story but to also teach children about conservation and protecting endangered species such as the sea turtles.

Love this book. I like the fact that the two Chihuahuas are adorable and smart. There is a lesson of sorts here, learning about loggerhead turtles and the illegal trade for turtles and eggs. Kids will love this book especially since it is about dogs, and a big mouth mockingbird.

Although this book is geared toward children, it is a great pleasure to read at any age. Every element of a great thriller/mystery is there, characters that you care about, a plot that moves at just the right pace, and unexpected twists that keep you wanting to move quickly to the next chapter. Buy this book for people in your life who have not yet reached an old age but sneek a read in first before you give it to them.

THE ADVENTURES OF STARFOOT AND BROWN is a tale of two Chihuahuas, Bennett (alias Chief Inspector Detective Brown) and Lola (alias Sergeant Detective Starfoot). Bennett is the alpha dog and the brains of the pair, while Lola is a lovable food-obsessed airhead. They are living the sweet life of pampered pets when their beloved owner, Cora Howder, decides to take six weeks on Bald Head Island to write a book about the local wildlife, especially the loggerhead turtles. Bennett and Lola enjoy the island life, and quickly befriend a local mockingbird – but when they uncover a pair of loggerhead turtle egg thieves (and dog abusers), they plot a daring rescue with typical Chihuahua impetuousness. When you're Chihuahua-sized, though, the world can be a dangerous place. Can they survive foxes, cats, gators, rogue waves and worst of all, dangerous criminal humans, to save the loggerhead babies' future?
This is an adorable book, perfect for animal lovers who want a cheerful and engaging piece of mind candy. The author obviously knows Chihuahuas, and has their personalities down pat – somewhere between “Hey, food!” and “I'll bite your ankles off even if you ARE twenty times my size!” The other animals' personalities are reasonably believable, as long as you accept the talking-intelligent-animal trope in the first place. The story is charmingly told and entertaining, the editing is good, and the plot moves energetically along without getting bogged down in detail. The author's affection for the island and its animals is clearly evident.
There isn't much depth to this book, but there isn't meant to be. It can be a bit simplistic, with the good-vs.-evil lines clearly drawn, and sometimes the conflicts and dangers in the book can seem a bit too easily or suddenly solved. It is not a book to be read for intellectual stimulation or deep commentary on the issues of the day, but then, there's nothing wrong with that, either. The author does tout conservation and environmental preservation, but not in a particularly preachy or heavy-handed way.
If you love animals, and want to pass a pleasant hour or two inside the mind of a particularly intelligent Chihuahua, THE ADVENTURES OF STARFOOT AND BROWN is an entertaining read.

Talking Chihuahuas! A Little Girls Perfect Story
Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2013Verified Purchase
This great little read starts off with a teeny-tiny pup channelling messages to a little girl to pick her, pick her, pick her. And the little girl does and the adventure starts.
My daughter loves this story. It's a quick an easy read for her, and nothing too complicated for her to read on her own. It's got really good illustrations as well to help with the story telling. Chapters are short and well planned out in kid sized chunks. Fairly fast paced with some very lovable characters that leave a little girl wishing her dogs talked or were as cool as the ones in the story.
Great read, awesome price, don't miss out on this book for your little one.
