Reading our edition will make you feel that you are back on the Mississippi River with Tom and Huck. If you like our book, be sure to leave a review!
Mark Twain created the memorable characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn drawing from the experiences of boys he grew up with in Missouri. Set by the Mississippi River in the 1840's, it follows these boys as they get into predicament after predicament. Tom's classic whitewashing of the fence has become part of American legend, and the book paints a nostalgic picture of life in the middle of the nineteenth century. Tom runs away from home to an island in the river, chases Injun Joe and his treasure, and even gets trapped in a cave for days with Becky Thatcher. The book is one of Twain's most beloved stories.

About the author

Mark Twain is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 - 1910). He was born and brought up in the American state of Missouri and, because of his father's death, he left school to earn his living when he was only twelve. He was a great adventurer and travelled round America as a printer; prospected for gold and set off for South America to earn his fortune. He returned to become a steam-boat pilot on the Mississippi River, close to where he had grown up. The Civil War put an end to steam-boating and Clemens briefly joined the Confederate army - although the rest of his family were Unionists! He had already tried his hand at newspaper reporting and now became a successful journalist. He started to use the alias Mark Twain during the Civil War and it was under this pen name that he became a famous travel writer. He took the name from his steam-boat days - it was the river pilots' cry to let their men know that the water was two fathoms deep.
Mark Twain was always nostalgic about his childhood and in 1876 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was published, based on his own experiences. The book was soon recognised as a work of genius and eight years later the sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, was published. The great writer Ernest Hemingway claimed that 'All modern literature stems from this one book.'
Mark Twain was soon famous all over the world. He made a fortune from writing and lost it on a typesetter he invented. He then made another fortune and lost it on a bad investment. He was an impulsive, hot-tempered man but was also quite sentimental and superstitious. He was born when Halley's Comet was passing the Earth and always believed he would die when it returned - this is exactly what happened.

I found myself reading five to seven chapters at a time.
Mark twain's unique writing style and dialect leads to the adventures of tom sawyer becoming one of the most loved books of the 21st century
STORY: Although the vocabulary and speech patterns are unfamiliar to the kids, they are willing to ask for explanations and the book has us all laughing at every chapter. Even the four-year-old will ask about things he doesn't understand, or to "pause" if he needs to get something from another room.
COPY: I was skeptical that this would be a nice copy given the price I paid, but it is tasteful, sturdy for a paperback, and the original illustrations are plentiful and lend a great deal of character. The illustrations were important to me since they were included in the original publication. The children enjoy those they see now (there are too many to show them all), but they'll be even more useful as motivators and to help the children get a feel for that period, when they're old enough to read it on their own.

The actual print is decent and the illustrations nice.
The language can be a bit daunting for a kid, so I read it to him and explain the meaning of words and expressions when he needs that. He certainly finds the story entertaining and the characters interesting.
