Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two CD set containing a trio of albums from the acclaimed singer, songwriter and producer and his band Utopia. These three albums were the third, fourth and fifth by the quartet of Todd (guitar), Roger Powell (keyboards), Kasim Sulton (bass) and John Wilcox (drums). Adventures in Utopia (January 1980) became the band's biggest US album, and features the hit single 'Set Me Free'. It's b-side, 'Umbrella Man', features alongside it's parent album for the first time. The three bonus live tracks were taped between the album's recording and release and include Utopia's covers of the Who and ? And the Mysterians. Deface the Music (December 1980) is a homage to the Beatles, features 13 songs written in the style of Lennon & McCartney, arranged chronologically. Swing to the Right (1982), almost a concept album about money, war and greed (including a cover of Gamble & Huff's 'For the Love of Money'), was the band's last for the Bearsville label. Edsel.

If you enjoy Todd Rundgren and his band, Utopia, you will enjoy this compilation of 3 LPs/CDs on 2 discs. I owned 2 of the 3 on LP and, after a friend recently saw Todd in concert, yet did not have these, I bought a copy of this 2 CD set for him and one for me. My sentimental favorite is Deface the Music, which is a clever, intelligent tribute to The Beatles. It is hard to believe that Todd made this music about 33 years ago, yet each song still clearly resonates the complex and diverse composition that is characteristic of Todd. In a world where we are fortunate to have so much great music, all I can say is this music by Todd (and the talented lads that make up Utopia) is indicative of his musical genius! Sit back, crank it up, and enjoy!

Big Todd Rundgren fan and loved UTOPIA at this time with these four musicians.I have most
of the Utopia Dvd's and some of their cd's and thought i would add this to my collection.I had
always liked Adventures in Utopia and had it on album, but wanted to get it on cd,and never
had listened to Deface the Music or Swing to the Right.

The cd's sound great and Adventures in Utopia was just as i expected, very GOOD.Deface
the Music was ok but i did like Swing to the Right. To each his own on that, but the price
was not bad and glad to have it.

This second batch of Edsel Todd/Utopia reissues are quite nice if you don't have the original Rhino versions from the late 80's. The booklets are really well done with full lyrics and nice pictures and great text. But if none of that interests you, keep your old versions and skip these. Sound quality here is exactly the same as the old versions. And certainly not enough bonus material to warrant replacing the old versions. In some cases, no bonus material at all. Except, of course, for the Runt and Ballad reissues. Great bonus stuff there. But even still, the original Rhino version of "Ballad..." sounds much better than the Edsel version. Hope this helps for those who aren't sure whether to invest the money in these replacements.

These albums never sounded better, and I'm extremely impressed with the remastering, as well as the long sought after bonus tracks on "Adventures in Utopia". I personally find it to be a pleasure to have more than one album on one CD, and thoroughly enjoyed disc two in this set for that reason in particular, as well as the jewel case packaging, as opposed to cardboard sleeves.
I ordered through the vendor (AOxfordshireEngland), who have an incredible selection, as well as low prices for a quality product...

Nicely priced to get three albums for the price of one.
Not bad, but not Todd's main creative period. I wanted the
"Deface the Music"/ Beatles tribute album which is very, very clever and adept.

Utopia was the best band in the universe! These are 2 strong albums. Deface the Music is a fitting tribute to that other great band The Beatles.

I first heard this album in college and have been looking for it for a long time (who knew you had to look under Utopia instead of Todd Rundgren. I recommend this album to all especially progressive rock fans.

Three albums each of which has some very strong material. I'm not sure you can call these albums "typical" when in fact they represent a large fraction of Utopia's total output. Adventures in Utopia has ear-friendly classics like "Caravan" and "The Very Last Time" but also embarrassments such as "You Make Me Crazy" ("Are you interested enough to see what's left of me?"). Deface the Music is one of the most consistently pleasing Utopia albums. Requirement: You must adore the Beatles but also not take them too seriously. Swing to the Right is perhaps the Utopia album most polarized between their best and worst material. "Junk Rock/Million Monkeys" is almost impossible to listen to even once, and there are other total losers, but several of the tracks, especially "Lysistrata," are among the best stuff they ever did. If you are new to Utopia, this 3-album package will make you expert on both the pluses and minuses of the band. The bottom line is that for one low (?) price you get a good dozen or more fantastic songs and will be well on your way to a complete collection of a great band.
