Crump makes the Aeneid very easy to understand... almost too easy. I enjoyed the book very much, but he adds random facts on the sides of the page. Most of the time, the facts were really helpful and helped me understand the story better. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is because some of these helpful notes were almost condescending, like Crump thinks his readers need to be informed as a side note "Odysseus, from the Odyssey" (page 30). (I think maybe he wanted to fill in some margins when he thought they looked too empty, but that's just a guess.) It also made me mad when he said things in the side notes like "...as the next lines show" (page 26). He also tells the readers on page 117 "This particular future date will come in Chapter 12..." SPOILER ALERT. I really wish he wouldn't do that. It gives stuff away. What if I wanted to be surprised? Thanks a lot for telling me what's about to happen, Crump. But, like I said, the notes are -for the most part- pretty helpful.

David Crump's vivid, compelling, and timely translation of Virgil's masterwork brings the Aeneid to life for a generation that is largely unfamiliar with it. This is the best new translation in years - and the only one that puts Virgil into plain English. We often forget that Virgil's language was simple enough for everyday Romans to enjoy. And reading Professor Crump's vivid translation gives us a sense of what they experienced. A must-read!

The Aeneid was a very interesting read. Professor Crump's translation is in every day English and his many notes make the story easy to follow. I hardily recommend this book for your summer reading list.

For the first time, I understood Virgil's story. Thanks to the author for writing this book for the non-scholar. Thoroughly enjoyable.
