One thing to consider, as a user, do you know how to adjust a rope to your height? If the rope slaps the ground, its too long. No wonder it will wear out quickly or break. The rope should barely skim the surface. Stand on the rope with both feet together. The end of the handles (the bottom end, NOT the top where the rope meets the handles) should reach no higher than your arm pits. Then, over time, make very small adjustments until you have the rope customized for you. Once a rope is too short, you can't make it longer.
Having said that, this rope is made for speed and performance. If you can't get it up to fast speeds, its your technique, not the rope. How you hold the handles, which should be near the end where the padding is located, how you jump (you don't need to leap 12 inches in the air to clear a quarter inch rope), arm and elbow placement when turning the handles, wrist movements, etc. It makes a world of difference.
I really put this thing through its paces and it performs like a champ. I do all sorts of tricks with it, and it hasn't failed me. Its a bit expensive compared to other ropes, but you get what you pay for. Besides, once you have the handles, the rope is only $5 to replace. Oil the ball bearings with a small drop of 3 In 1 oil or a similar product. It's only common sense.
If you are searching for a rope that will help you jump with intensity, and you are going to get serious and stay serious about jumping, this is the one, hands down. If, on the other hand, you are looking to skip and frolic and not put much effort into your jumping routine/workout, save the money, purchase a cheaper rope, and you won't disappoint yourself.
-1 Star for the plastic rope. It is very difficult to get kinks and deformities out of, although when it hits you it stings much less than the coated wire if that's any consolation.
Everything else is well constructed. I believe the plastic rope will be a love it or hate it item and can see why this has 1 and 5 star reviews. Regardless of what's between them, the handles are well constructed with fast bearings. Maybe not the fastest, but still very good.
There are some online who have put wire ropes on Aero Speed handles with good results.
For comparison I own an Rx rope (2.6 oz i think), Rogue SR-1, Aero Speed, and Ultra Speed. I like the Rx and Rogue the best.
I am very happy that I invested in the jump rope it really is an upgrade, here is why:
1) the rope is lighter compared to a solid pvc or encassed wire - at first I did not like this but when I got used to it, found it preferable;
2) you screw the hollow rope into an attachment to the handle. Most other ropes go into the inside of the handle and are held by a grip. In my experience this means one of 2 things: either adjustment is almost impossible or, the grip does not hold for more than a few weeks.
Just before switching to the Buddy Lee, the rope flew out of the handle of one such jump rope and nearly hit a guy nearby at the gym. With Buddy Lee, the attachment to the handle truly is innovative and a class above anything else I have seen. The fact the rope screws into the handle means it is completely secure. What that also means is that you have to cut the rope to exactly the right length. At first I had the rope too long as I was scared to cut it too short and I kept catching on it but when I got the right length I was jumping rope until my arms were about to fall off and I could not jump any longer.
3)The movement is so smooth that jumping rope is almost too easy. I agree with some of the other reviewers who say that cross-overs are easier with this rope too.
4)I also agree with previous comments around value for money vs. cost. This rope has already lasted longer than a $10 rope and it does not look anything like done yet and the point is, there is no frustration with it.
5) I have not experienced any issue of the bolts coming loose.
Do yourself a favor and by this rope if you are into this activity.
