Taking the day to read and enjoy some children's books I've acquired what with Children's Day coming up on Thursday. This made for a fine collection of children's plays and drama activities. I liked the way some of the activities paralleled the plays including "The Lion's Court" (easy to picture a 5-year old with crown asking others what animals they are and what they bring to the make believe court). "Crowns and Cranes" (an active chase game) and "Animals, Animals Where Are You?" (finding your partner based only on what sound an animal makes). I also enjoyed rereading many of my favorite fables - see if you can connect the popular play with the moral:

Titles -- The Ants and the Grasshopper, The Miller, his Son and the Donkey, The Crow and the Pitcher
Morales -- "Where there is a will, there is a way" , "Fail to prepare, prepare to fail" , "If you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing nobody"

Well-done, versatile, and a creative assortment. I liked them!

I was a difficult child to say the least and I remember my parents using "fables" to try to teach me lessons and keep me entertained. It wasn't until many years later that I realized how old "Aesop's Fables" were and how many children they have probably been told to. While "The Hare and the Tortoise" and "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" are probably two of the most notable, there are some great plays here that both entertain and have some valuable underlying themes. The games included at the beginning of the book are also great for children and so much fun. A book filled with timeless tales that I can't recommend enough.

Super little book. I've used it with several of my classes (5 to 10 year olds) and the kids love the stories. Young children have no problem pretending to be the animals and the fact each story has a lovely moral at the end makes it even better.
