It has some limitations that kept it from being a five-star item. On the other hand, I have found myself going back to it and using it very regularly, and listening to more music generally than I typically did before I started testing it. So while it has a couple of frustrating points, I can't argue with the fact that it found its way into being a thing that I actually use regularly rather than shoving it back on a shelf somewhere because I don't actually enjoy it. That's really more important than anything.
Now, for more detail...
The design is striking in a good way. The copper stands out nicely against the black, and it's an unusual choice that adds a bit of extra interest and class to the device.
The sound quality is about as good as you can expect given the size of the speaker. It won't outdo a huge standing set of speakers for a home theater system, but that's pretty much just a limitation of physics. It also offers the benefit of portability (both for small size meaning you can carry it around and plug it in somewhere else, and the fact that it has an internal battery and can run on its own for 8 hours or so).
The quality of your music experience is probably going to be somewhat tied to how happy you are with Rdio.Read more ›
I had it delivered to my office, and when it arrived all of my coworkers gathered to stare in admiration (it just looks so great!). Once it was set up -- which was a SUPER simple process -- the party really started. Everyone had so much fun using the voice command to request songs and spinning the dial to see where Cone would lead us next. We discovered new songs/bands that we'd never heard of and we were reminded of old loves we had forgotten. Needless to say, everyone was sad when I took it home with me at the end of the day.
Once at home, my roommates did the same thing my coworkers did -- they played, partied, sang and danced -- effectively turning our living room into a dance hall (the sound easily filled the room). It was a relief when I finally had Cone to myself. It's true that it takes time for Cone to learn your listening habits, no argument there, but once it figures you out: magic. In the mornings, Cone knows exactly what I need to hear to get moving out of bed and in the evenings it knows just what to play to relax me after a long day. Even when it is not playing music, it still makes me happy just to look at it because the design is so stunning.
I would highly recommend this product for anyone looking for a music player of their own or for great gift ideas.
Cone's recommendations really do get better over time, and it gets to know the people listening to it. For example, my wife loves to listen to our local NPR station in the kitchen and living room after work -- guess what Cone plays every time within a few spins of the dial or a quick voice request? Or, if I bring it into the living room on Sunday morning, chances are it'll play something more my style. We've caught ourselves talking to it (IE: "Nice one, Cone!) more than once.
It's also a total conversation starter -- all of our friends and family that come over love using the voice control, spinning the dial and picking it up to move it from room to room. The social aspect of Cone (since it doesn't really *need* an app to use) makes it more popular in our house than our multiple Sonos speakers, which are now relegated to party duty and rarely listened to otherwise.
I'll explain why...
This thing is billed as a "thinking" music player, but that's insanely far from the truth. Instead, it has really really primitive AI that seems to pretty much just guess popular songs, regardless of whether I like them or not. I've never once asked it to play a podcast, but those seem to come up 50% of the time on random rotation.
The other gimmick of the Cone is the voice control. Unfortunately, this doesn't work well either, because lots of artists have uncommon names or spelling. Good luck requesting "Nas" or "Die Antwoord" or "SBTRKT" (or even worse are song names) and having the primitive voice recognition figure out what you're saying. And, as another reviewer pointed out, you can't ever tell whether it's because the Cone didn't understand you (most often) or because Rdio doesn't have the song or artist in their catalogue...
At first I thought, "Okay no worries, the cutting edge stuff has troubles, but I can always fall back to using the Aether app for my iPhone." Well, no luck there either because the app is extremely buggy and slow, so using it becomes extreeeemely frustrating very quickly. Every time you open it you need to wait five seconds for it to refresh what the currently playing song is. Half the time pressing pause/play doesn't work. And it doesn't even have any sort of "recently played" or similar lists to help you out, you have to manually type out searches for every thing you want to hear.Read more ›
