The hero lawyer, Will, is what you might call an ordinary bloke, plodding along in a job he hates until he is one of the victims of a holdup in a convenience store. How he becomes entangled with the life of the perpetrator is the plot of this novel. Frankie - the girlfriend of abusive violent Eddie, the armed robber - is searching for her brother and asks Will to help her.
He does and thereby sets the scene for the future.
I don't want to give a spoiler for this cleverly written and crafted story. The characterisation is excellent, the hero is endearing without being twee or too macho and the women in his life - Sarah and the extraordinary Frankie - play their parts with conviction.
The plot covers eight years, however the author has truncated this by bouncing across the time, but the interim is covered by Will in first person, thereby using a flowing narrative, which does not break up the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would be happy to read more of this Australian author's work.
When corporate lawyer Will McPherson is held up in an armed robbery, his life changes in ways he’d never dreamed of. He goes to court to give evidence and upon meeting the thief's girlfriend Frankie Slater, he is instantly captivated.
AN AFFAIR WITH DANGER is an intriguing, well-developed story that contains many surprises - most of all the ending. Will and Frankie were standouts. The author captured the flavour of these individuals and conveyed them beautifully.
It is a love story at the core, yet depicts the realities of being stuck in life and feeling trapped. The epilogue took my breath away - I could hear the music. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author gifted it to me for an honest review. 5 solid stars.
I quite enjoyed AN AFFAIR WITH DANGER by Robin Storey. It was well-written and I found the author’s style easy to sink into. Of course, the entire plot really hinged on the attraction between Mike and Frankie and I thought it worked. Two strangers … different sides of the tracks … find themselves drawn to each other. Yes, I was pulled into this relationship and was interested in how it developed. The author did a spectacular job in bringing these characters to life. They were exceedingly well-defined and had a lot of aspects to explore. It made the spelunking and delving into what made them tick pleasurable. It also ensured that the dynamic between them was ever-changing and not a given landscape. However, I am starting to sense a pattern with males in these stories. It seems the hotter the love interest, the more their frontal cortex shuts down.
As for negatives, I didn’t like the first couple of chapters. For me, it was a case of TMI and a lot could have been edited out. Because of this, the novel started out slowly instead of putting the hook in my mouth and towing me like an old carp. The other thing I didn’t like was the ending. Endings to me are really important, so the fact I wasn’t jazzed about this one will be reflected in the final rating. I should add that this isn’t a case of an author going off on a tangent and tacking on a ridiculous finish just because they could. No, this one was in keeping with previous events … and thoughtful … but it didn’t resonate with me.
The positives? AN AFFAIR WITH DANGER is an interesting, well-developed story that contains some surprises. The pacing is excellent as is the dialogue, but all roads lead to Will and Frankie. They were the standouts. The author captured the flavor of these individuals and conveyed it beautifully.
If you’re looking for intrigue that holds your interest, try AN AFFAIR WITH DANGER. It packs enough punch to keep you reading and enough emotion to make you care. I’m rating this one 3.8 stars.
For the purposes of full disclosure, I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
At times in this story I was a bit confused. There were quite a few time jumps but it went well with the story. This isn't your typical romance story but Will and Frankie's story is heartbreaking. This story is the most realistic story that I have read in a long time. I could actually see this all happening. My heart absolutely broke at the end, I did not see that coming. The ending will just leave you speechless.
I voluntarily received a copy for my honest review. This is a solid 3.5 stars.
