Ok, enough of the serious stuff. Granny made an appearance once again and cracked me up with her one liners. I so wish I had a granny like this.
"Why does everyone expect me to sugarcoat stuff? Do I look like a ******* bakery?"
We got to revisit with Aubrey and Jake and catch up on all that has happened with them. This story wasn't as sweet as the first but I still loved it, "flawed" heroine and all. This tiny excerpt from the book explains a lot about Piper..... "My biggest weakness my entire life is that I care too much about everyone else and not enough about myself." Great book and I can't wait to read more from this series.
"What? They have so much sexual tension going on that it's making me horny for crying out loud." ~Granny
Blake is the sexy as sin bassist for Battlescars! The band just got off tour and are back in Ohio living in Jake's guest house working on their new album. Blake is still completely hung up on Piper and is having a hard time being around her knowing she is back with her long-term boyfriend, Cole. After being left heartbroken in the past he has refused to get attached to another girl, but Piper snuck up on him and he never expected to be so captivated by her. But he will not be burned again, he don't think he can handle it!
"Life's a bitch, 'cause if it was a slut it would be easy." ~Granny
Piper is just trying to stay afloat, but everyday she is struggling a little more to keep the pieces together. Her boyfriend Cole was recently discharged from the Marines, and since he came home her world has been turned upside down. Cole is having a hard time adjusting to being a civilian and dealing with all of the emotions inside his head. He begins leaving for days at a time without telling anyone where he is going. He is killing Piper's soul piece by piece without even realizing it. One night when he leaves and Piper is scared of where he may have went, she calls Blake to help her find him. Blake becomes the friend she needs without hesitation, even though it is killing him because he is in love with her!
"My heart beats for you. I'll never ask for anyone but you, only you."
Soon everything starts to fall apart with Cole, and Piper can't deny how she feels about Blake any longer! But with one phone call, everything comes crashing down! The choices made can't be taken back and their pasts come out and threaten any chance of a future! I was so back and forth on who my heart was breaking for. My heart broke for Blake… and then it shattered for Piper!!! This was an emotional ride and I loved it! Can't wait for more of this series… but I think I am still Team Jake! You get more of all the characters I am growing to love more with each book… especially Granny!
I tried to like Piper but she toyed with the emotions of too many people for me to find any sympathy or warmth for her at all, and cheesy, corny Blake was a wimpy pushover. I would have liked to bang both their heads together to see if it knocked any sense into them. They did plenty of banging other things together all on their own.
It was an easy read, with an uncomplicated plot, what I call a page flicker, where the pages drift by and don't really need much attention from you at all.
I was a little shocked that the bad boy, obnoxious boyfriend turned out to be suffering from a genuine problem, I think the issue of PTSD could have been treated a little more sensitively, and although Piper shed many tears saying she had tried to support him and seek help, I didn't see a lot of evidence of that. Maybe it was in the first book.
All in all it was competent enough, but I couldn't invest in the characters, despite the fact they were rock stars.
