I bought this book thinking it would have some hard facts, studies, and realistic suggestions for curbing overconsumption. Instead it was largely anecdotal, stating things as though they were fact without any proof- e.g. Europe has a shorter workweek and are substantially happier. There's no actual mention of the actual workweek, productivity and standard of living, or what measure of happiness was used to draw such a conclusion (might I mention I live in Italy and find the standard of living to be generally lower, and am not certain that Italians are happier than Americans as a result of their shorter work-week). Other examples include a statement like, "the simple living website had XX hits this year proving that this movement is gaining momentum"- it doesn't mention how many hits that website had last year, or the year before, and doesn't compare it to the number of hits for shopping sites over the same time period. Further it doesn't annotate that perhaps the weaker economy caused that rather than an idea that Americans are latching ahold of a desire to reduce their consumption. Further the ideas for reducing overconsumption consist of unrealistic or simple mentions about buying a more efficient car, light bulbs, and reusable shopping bags will help simplify your life. Well- carrying around reusable shopping bags is actually more painful than just getting new ones every time you go to the store so that doesn't actually simplify my life (I happen to use reusable shopping bags- but it certainly doesn't simplify my life or encourage me to reduce consumption, it just reduces my waste footprint (which is a desirable goal but one that has NOTHING to do with overconsumption or affluenza)). In short- this is a book full of "nothings" that has nothing very useful to offer.

I am reading this book for my Sociology of Consumption class and it has changed my outlook on spending. My husband and I had started being more conscientious about our spending but this book is a wake up call!
We all need to reconsider how we let over spending rule our lives. We are not taking into consideration the consequences of our consumption and what legacy we are leaving our kids with. Some of the negative reviews on this website show how some of us are missing the point. We don't need numbers and statistics to do some soul searching of how we want to keep up with the Joneses.
I am pursuing my undergraduate degree in Psychology and then going to Grad school for Marriage and Family Therapy. I definitely will use this book to help families to not be enslaved by over consuming.

Affluenza:How Overconsumption is Killing Us and How to Fight Back explains just what the title suggests. There are self surveys to allow readers to see "how sick they are". It points out the consequences of letting affluenza go unchecked in our lives and our world. This is a must read for everyone.

Probably one of the most helpful books I've ever read. I was humbled as I realized the ways I've literally bought into this consumerist materialistic culture. This book has absolutely changed the way I view a lot of things in American culture. Read it. You'll like it.

An extremely important topic for everyone to read and the solutions practiced. We buy and dispose of way too much stuff. This book focuses in on other aspects of over consumption that I hadn't considered. It is a perfect compliment to the original you-tube video.

The thoughts expressed in Affluenza and its preceding PBS programs are central to our collective understanding of what's driving so much stress, loneliness, and destruction - especially in the U.S., but increasingly, the whole planet - and how we can begin to find our way out, by changing the definition of words like "success" and "progress."
I know that many high school and college courses use this highly-readable book, and that's a great comfort to me, because the next generation will need to deal with many of the debilitating effects this epidemic has caused. This third edition of the book is even more focused on how we can begin to recover, with a strategy similar to those used in rehab programs: admit we have a problem; seek support; and create a healthy, new identity.
