- From Anna Jedrziewski of Retailing Insight Magazine:
“Creator of Permission to Succeed® Noah St. John is the go-to guy for ‘Abundant Lifestyle’ strategies for many big corporations. In his newest edition of The Book of Afformations, he further elaborates on his ideas about why traditional affirmations and positive thinking don’t produce the results people expect.
“Readers will learn about the ‘Belief Gap’, the difference between empowering and disempowering questions, how to turn on the built-in automatic search function in their brains, how to combine empowering questions with their desires and appropriate action in order to achieve their goals, and how to stay motivated while working toward those goals. Part III, the bulk of the book, provides specific Afformations for ten major life categories (health, money, love, etc.).
“Written in the same upbeat, sometimes humorous, style that has made St. John such a popular keynote speaker, the book is highly motivating. Let your customers know that this is something new — neuroscience moves self-help up to a new level. The best news is that readers can start putting St. John’s ideas into practice after reading the first chapter.”
From the Author
I wrote The Book of Afformations because of my "accidental" discovery of Afformations on April 24, 1997 in The Shower That Changed Everything... You'll read about that in Chapter One...
This new Hay House edition is the 4th Edition of The Book of Afformations which has been in print continuously since 2001. I'm humbled and honored to be a Hay House author, because of the unique connection Hay House authors get to enjoy with their amazing readers around the world.
I hope you enjoy the book as much as I enjoyed writing it...
And I encourage you to share the book and the teaching of Afformations with your family members, friends, and colleagues at work, because it really can change their lives for the better.
In fact, I feel this is my most personal book yet, because so many of the wonderful things that have happened in my life, have happened because of Afformations...
You deserve the difference Afformations can make in your life, too.
Welcome to The Afformations Revolution! --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

But - this is supposed to be a review of the book, not the method, and that is where I get hung up.
First -the good. The information is presented simply in an easily understandable, almost conversational format. I like that he gives chapters on pre-written Afformations to utilize. Even the personal testimonies and stories (which I don't typically enjoy) seemed to fit well.
The part I had SO much trouble getting past was the HUGE marketing slant this book took on. Why don't people understand that "less really is more" - and when a book comes off as a sales pitch it actually diminishes the message and can make people less likely to purchase the "other" stuff. I am seriously a marketer's dream and would have had no problem finding and purchasing additional audios or programs - had they been mentioned once or provided at the end in a list - in a meaningful way.
Some things that really turned me off? Almost every book I've read on manifesting mentions keeping things to yourself at first to avoid the negative opinions of others (i.e . the whole "are you crazy, that never works" talk). Noah actually puts in as one of the steps to using his process that you MUST share HIS method with others. It is said multiple times. Why is it necessary that to use these tools, I must market them FOR HIM as well?Read more ›
The problems I have with this book are two-fold:
1 - In this day and age of environmentalism and "being green," I have a problem with lengthy books that should actually be short books. They waste a tremendous amount of paper. (I call it "tree murder.") This book, for example, is over 200 pages. However, the "guts" of the information could have easily been covered in 20 to 30 pages. So, it's not only a waste of paper, but it's a waste of time to have to wade through 200+ pages for 20 to 30 pages of information.
2 - The second problem is that the author is a walking advertorial for himself. He seems only partly-interested in providing the information that readers are paying for, and mostly-interested in plugging all of the other products and services that he has for sale and that he wants readers to also purchase. Years ago, books were respected, because all they contained was information. These days, more and more books are nothing but advertisements, and it is getting to the point of being shameless.
In sum, if the author had real integrity, he would provide his information in a reasonably short book and nix the ads for everything else he wants to sell. Books should be about sharing information, not selling products.
1. Counter negative self-talk with positive inner statements. (In this case, by changing a sentence like, "I'm a loser." into a why question like "Why am I such a winner?" This transformation supposedly overcomes the "belief gap" problems of more familiar "affirmations" such as "I am a winner.")
2. Determine desires and use them to set goals.
3. Make a plan. Then take action to realize goals.
5. Succeed by providing as much value/good/love as possible to as many other people as possible.
The 223 page book gives examples, includes testimonials (that sound, strangely, as if the same person had written them all), and, unfortunately, pitches (and pitches and pitches) additional products such as audio tapes, home study programs, and more. I have to hand it to this guy. He knows how to set up a brand, and how to build alliances. Embedded in his personal story at the end is an unsubtle pitch for Apple computers. (I almost threw the book across the room with that one.) This may be a great way to make money, but, ya know, it's getting too familiar to work as well as it once did.
That said, if you want a lesson in how to succeed as a motivational speaker/success guru, pick this one up. You probably already know all of the content. What you need to look at is the format. Check out the website.Read more ›
