The authors have done an incredible job outlining a typical deployment, with some very hard hitting details. The photography is exceptional in its stark depiction of the reality, yet there is great beauty and peace to be found in many images.
My personal experience in reading this. Yes, it was difficult (as was the deployment) but it was also empowering and a validation of my service. More importantly, it gave me pause to remember that while many didn't return, all with whom I spent my time did.
I believe the authors, and those of us who have been in combat, will agree, it is impossible to capture the scope and visceral response to war that occurs without actually "being there." This book does a remarkable job of taking the non-combatant into the battle.
For those that served this book will serve as reminder (good, bad and indifferent) of your time in Afghanistan. For those fortunate enough not to have gone, it will give you a glimpse into life on deployment.
I wish to personally thank the authors for their sacrifice in creating this photo essay, I know it was not easy.
Put this on your shelf, you will be glad you did.
P.S, I just read the 3 star review. This book, I believe, was never intended to be an in-depth treatise on the politics of the Afghan war, it is what it is, and does the job very well.
I don't think of any of us civilians understand what it's like to be a soldier in today's Army. I think this book gives us just the slightest of understanding what these men and women go through on a daily basis.
I have family that serves in the Armed Forces, and I know that there are things that they have seen an experience that they simply cannot explain to those of us at home. I think this book can help start to bridge that gap, even if only a little.
I found myself going page to page hearing a story just by looking as these beautiful images. I loved seeing a raw and real inside look to what my brother and husband have experienced. The photos of the children melted my heart. Afghanistan: On the Bounce made me smile, laugh and cry. I see passion in this book and I can't wait to see more from this author! If you have loved ones who serve, I highly recommend getting this book for yourself... and them too!
We then went through it a second and third time over, studying the power each and every photo exuded. The emotional context behind every picture with its use of colors, depth of field, and composition showed an understanding beyond the basics of photography.
The photos of Soldiers in their barracks, the Afghan people, and the soldiers' return home showed an understanding of natural light. The use was like that of a painting of an artist.
Truly, this is as much a piece of fine art as it is a source of information. I hope that there is more to come from these guys.
