I have read numerous books on entrepreneurship and how to start a small business. Most of the books out there rehash the same mantras, but this book is different. This book is an inspiring read for future entrepreneurs, and it can and should be a mandatory reading for any business class dealing with the issue surrounding black entrepreneurship/business in America. This book gives a short but concise analysis of cases, statutes, and social/political dispositions that has either hindered or encouraged black entrepreneurship. It is thoroughly researched and cited so that a one can explore the subject in more detail in the future. We often forget (or fail to admit) the legal battles that was/is perpetuated on blacks in economic arena. Prof. Rogers' book is that reminder, but also the encourager to move beyond those barriers. Did I forget that he also includes a "blueprint" on how and why one should move pass those barriers?

Great historical and modern day perspective on African-American entrepreneurs. Provides the reality of entrepreneurship particularly for those who must overcome almost unbearable odds simply to have the freedoms enjoyed by the majority culture in the United States. A must read for all, but particularly African-American entrepreneurs!

I would like to thank Professor Rogers of Howard University. I would like to publicly note that one of my inspirations has been the book Professor Rogers wrote about entrepreneurship: The African American Entrepreneur Then and Now. This is an incredible read no matter ones background. I have read it several times and have been infected to become a serial entrepreneur. I have also highly recommend this book as a must read to all the executives who work for my corporation. One first blush one might think this is another boaring book on Madame C J Walker and others but NO this is surprisingly outstanding book that links the history of African American Entrepreneurs and how to be one today! The book is well annotated, I guess being a law professor at both Howard University and The University of the District of Columbia means he has the chops for the documentation, and brings to life people that are not the standard persons brought out for Black History Month. However what truly sets this book apart from the rest is Part II where Prof. Rogers goes through the steps on how anyone can start their own business.
