Scott & Peyton are the best couple! Peyton is trying to keep everything superficial & light because she's afraid they'll end up co-dependent like her parents. Scott is trying to hold back & not jump into a superficial relationship because he's in love with her & wants more. Erin Nicholas has given us the best happy go lucky party girl with unplumbed depths & paired her with the steady hunky town cop. Peyton is sassy, sarcastic, sexy & steady. She thinks she's too needy until she finally begins to see herself the way everyone else does. Scott tries not to take over everything but still show Peyton that she needs him. The familiar cast of supporting characters pop in & out giving the writer opportunities to update us on where their lives are going. Will Hope & TJ ever have that baby?? Why do we have to wait so long for the next one?
So by all the shouty capitals, you can tell I fell in love with Payton and Scott. Payton has floated in and out of previous books but you don't need to read any of them to get a sense of who she is. She is the town bad girl. Wait, I don't really want to say she's bad because she truly isn't. She loves her friends and family so deeply that she will take a baseball bat to a car of a man who has done her friend wrong. She will throw a party for her friends just because. She will pull them onto the dance floor just to get them to smile. But she does do things to have someone, namely Scott, bail her out. She wants to be dependent upon someone but not too dependent. Her parents have a weird dependency thing going on and she wants to avoid anything that resembles that like the zombies are attacking. But she also wants to have someone need her. I freaking love Payton.
Scott is the town cop. So he naturally wants to take care of people. He loves his home town and has seen things from outside of it that he never wants to see in it. Payton gets his overly protective thing going into hyper drive. He wants to have the relationship that she wants to avoid. Not the overly dependent thing her parents have but a mutual dependency. One where they need each other. He has a tendency to put his feelings out there because Payton is a blunt kind of girl. Her thoughts come out without filter and she needs to hear things in a blunt way. Scott is the one who pushes for a couple thing without all the hotness of sex. Weird, huh?
Payton has to take care of Scott after he's shot. He finds this as the perfect opportunity to show her what a real relationship can be. She finds this as the perfect opportunity to get busy with him. I love how the tables turn on both of them. Over and over again. What you want going into a relationship is not exactly what you get out of it. Sometimes it's more .
