Mark reads this audible, which adds a lot (over America Alone - read by some other undocumented reader).

“Reading” this in late 2019, it still holds up quite well; reality is catching up to the predictions. I’m not sure that there’s too many others that can make you laugh while delivering such a depressing assessment of the world. If you’re familiar with Mark, you basically know the theme of what’s coming, but there is a ton of concrete examples that are new to me. Many books in this area (cultural demise) will leave you with a “what to do” chapter. This chapter is worth the investment, this is real-world / real-YOU stuff to act on.

As usual Mark Steyn manages to be hilarious, erudite, and dead-serious at the same time. He pulls no punches in After America, and while reading this excellent book, I frequently didn't know whether to laugh or cry. The author's command of the evidence is undeniable, and his vivid descriptions of the decline of Western Civilization are both frightening and familiar. Crushing debt, out-of-control immigration, denial, and near-universal insouciance are rapidly destroying the West -- right now.

Will the American people take heed of the dreary (and increasingly dangerous) state of our world and face up to our responsibilities as citizens of the sole super-power, or will we remain paralyzed and incapable of taking action until it is, quite simply, too late?

Mark Steyn is quite an entertaining writer/speaker, spot on on a lot of issues, on a number of issues I disagree with him but then I'm somewhat moderate in my political views, neither way right or left on most things. Well-wrtten and amusing. He has a talent for the entertaining turn of phrase. He's right about the deficit for one thing. If the country doesn't get a handle on its finances things will get dire fairly soon. His comparison of America and Britain and the onset of decline is quite interesting. On the nature of Islam and the threat it poses I'm afraid he's correct, it's simply the current phase of an historic clash of civilizations based on fundamentally different ideas. This is a problematic view of things, another inconvenient truth we're trying to avoid, but at the very least we should be having a vigorous debate about it and what we should do before it's too late. It's unfortunate how in America these days people with different views on things tend to dig in on their positions with a take no prisoners mindset. The Bible says, "Let us sit down and reason together".

Fantastic follow-up to America Alone

Mark Steyn follows up his last book "America Alone." Again, Steyn does a superb job of outlining the crisis America is in, and the steps we should take to avoid becoming the European disastrous experiment. Many admire the European state as a model for America, but Europe was able to become the highly socialist state because America picked up the tab of defending the moral order in the world. When someone else is paying to protect you, why not offer more "services" to your constituents?

I enjoyed the quote from Justice Marshall that sums up the growth of the federal government. "Industrial power should be decentralized. It should be scattered into many hands so that the fortunes of the people will not be dependent on the whim or caprice, the political prejudices, the emotional stability of a few self-appointed men. The fact that they are not vicious men but respectable and social minded is irrelevant."

This quote from Justice Marshall hits home with the basic understanding of our Constitution and its formulation of "rights."
As Steyn eloquently points out, "rights" as meant by the U.S. constitution is more geared to "negative rights"...."the right to be left alone by the government in respect of your speech, your guns, etc." Nowadays, rights are seen as "rights" to stuff granted by yours truly, the government (but paid for by you).

Chilling and yet hilarious

Mark Steyn has the rare and unique ability to use humour and wit to drive home points that are actually as serious as can be. In his previous book, 'America Alone', Steyn argued that the demographic and moral collapse of Europe meant that only America was left to uphold Western values and confront Islamist terrorism and Sino-Russian authoritarianism. In the time since he wrote the first book, he concludes now even America may be doomed.

Steyn concludes in this book that pork barrel spending by successive US governments, and similar social trends that brought down Europe now taking root in America means that now even America cannot morally or financially maintain its role as global protector. Instead, he foresees a future where, without American global protection, regional thugs like Chavez bully their neighbours, and at a global level where rampant and unchecked radical Islam forces countries to become even more submissive to their demands.

This book is a chilling, but informative read.
