I thoroughly enjoyed this period novel, as opposed to other pre-equals that I have read, this one is more than an introduction, it is a complete story, able I feel to be read as a stay alone.
The story was charming in the way that the author obviously did her homework regarding speech patterns of the time and knitting them into the story. It took me on a memory trip to my much younger self and Georgette Heyer books.
17 year old Laurel falls in love with Robert Laurenson, the Viscount Laningham. He believes her to be the love of his life and petitions her guardian for her hand in marriage and pushes for a speedy union before he has to depart for Spain and the war against Bonaparte.
Laurel is left at Landings, a brand new inexperienced bride and at the mercy of Robert's twin sister, Rhonda, a jealous, spoilt, spiteful woman. There is a dangerous jewel thief, duplicity, vicious rumors and so much more. I look forward to reading it's follow-up.
The story deserves a 4, but there are several jumbled passages that escaped the editor and proofreader's scrutiny and as such I am unable to fairly allocate more than 3 stars.
I thought reading this text was much like watching a butterfly break from it's cocoon - artful, pleasant, and suspenseful.
When her husband has to up and leave for war, Laurel is left alone to face the terrors that flood the night. Alone and in charge, Laurel has no choice but to step up to the plate and solve these break in mysteries.
The romance and suspense were spot on perfection! I'm not just saying that. I mean I honest to god felt like I was Laurel on multiple occasions and it scared the hell out of me!! (Not the love making! That part was very romantic and not at all scary, I promise. This isn't Mr. Penn.)
I loved the historical time period, as well. It's no secret I'm obsessed with historical fiction and the mannerisms and setting in this book specifically did NOT disappoint! In fact, this is one of the best historical romances I have ever read! It's truly capturing, breathtaking, and a lot of other -ings! I recommend this book for those who enjoy a little mystery added to their historical romance.
I fell in love with Laurel. She is so naive at first and grows so much throughout the course of the story. Each passage is vivid and gripping, from sights to smells to the fear in Laurel's heart, I felt I was right there amidst the action. Scenes of passion are tastefully done, and places and characters remain true to their time period. I appreciated the author's attention to making everything authentic, from dialogue to setting, and for keeping me guessing to the end. The love and mystery aspects are spot on and highly entertaining. A perfect read for autumn or year round.
There were parts that were touching and positive but not enough compensate for the other sadness. Ms. Woodson is talented, in my opinion, this book was just not for me.
