Fascinating History on Economics and What Went Wrong

I loved reading this book because it gets to the point, offers an historical account of economics, breaks it down clearly, and then takes us on a delightful journey is understanding society and governance. What I value about the author is that he does not toot his own horn, does not speak in platitudes, and does not pit theoriest against each other, nor does he fall into the polizaring politics trap that many economics are using for disregarding a particular theory and/or taking advantage of the readership to push a particular theory. Borders give it to us straight. And yes there is a problem not only in how capitalism has evolved but also the misinterprtations of capitalism. Further, Borders indentifies traditional liberalism and how that social movement was obfuscated into modern liberalism. But there is more to it than that--as Borders takes us outside economics and into a world where the masculine and femine have a mythic and psychological effect on society. My personal takeway is that we need to keep learning, understanding, and strategizing how the world can be based on the currents rather than how anyone thinks it ought to be based on one's personal morality or their political views.

Max Borders is among my favorite authors, and for damn good reason: his insights are so poignant, so deep, so nuanced, so timely, and, what I find most intriguing: they are so unique, and so post-partisan. You can't find thinking like his almost anywhere today, and it beautifully bridges our current tribal partisan divide. I recommend his work to people on the far left and far right both and everywhere in between, knowing Max will invite them into a higher-order vision that both honors the wisdom in their current perspective, yet also integrates it with what seems like its opposite. He artfully takes people off of the playing field of divisive left-right politics, and shows instead an entirely new way of looking at our societal systems, and how they could further evolve. I really can't recommend this book (and his other!) highly enough.

I will begin by saying I only read the Introduction to this book, but that was more than enough. The author routinely uses extreme language (e.g. Our unifying theme, as Americans, is collapse., . The whole “thing” — i.e. America as we know it — could come down at any time… ) and glosses over complexities. For example, he claims that the Federal Reserve Board is responsible for every economic ill, including our ever rising national debt, but ignores the fact that Congress sets fiscal policy. He even admits why he uses such extreme language, that he’s “… in an attention arms race. Other sensational titles are out, and The End could be its own genre. The publishing world engages in meme wars, too, and one has to compete with doomsayers who’ve shown real potency selling catastrophic visions…” It is not that I disagree with the claim that we are at a critical cross-roads in history and faced with severe economic, political, and environmental challenges that may lead to catastrophe. What I object to is his use of sensationalism to sell his book and the lack of serious scholarship to support his views. He is no Steven Pinker or Yuval Harari. Do not bother with this book, there are many far better to choose from

Max's book is full of intriguing ideas that are rooted in plausible directions for a new rebirth of American ideals. I found myself highlighting a lot of important topics and getting pleasantly triggered by the libertarian bent. I live in a place where big "L" libertarians espouse their ideals and I find them quite near-sighted; however, these ideas were nuanced and had a degree of humility to them. Best of all: he acknowledged he could be wrong in some aspects and is willing to let the evolution of ideas sort out what will reign supreme. I only wished such a system was in place so we could see what works and what doesn't. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in GameB, intuitional change, or novel ideals.

The authors plausible theories about what after a collapse of the US may look like provided a ton of content for further discussion with those in my world. I see it as one of the great books to emerge from this struggle that helped me make sense of the noise and can provide a way forward for future generations.

I wasn't sure quite what to expect with this book and wound up very much enjoying it. Chapters 4-6 were my favorites, masterfully and thoughtfully tackling such topics as "collective intelligence" and the current discourse around critical race theory. The author paints a compelling picture that the US is in crisis along multiple fronts. Along the way he weaves in fascinating discussions, topics, studies, stories, anecdotes, etc. Though I didn't agree with all of his proposed solutions for after the collapse, they had me thinking a great deal--to my mind a very good sign.
